Symantec millenNium action response team offers y2k protection, support, and peace of mind
Comprehensive Program Enables Customers to
Receive Immediate, Around-the-Clock Assistance from Symantec Anti-Virus Research
Center (SARC) and Customer Support; Makes Extensive Y2K Information Available via
Central Web Site
CUPERTINO, Calif. – Nov. 22, 1999 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today
announced the Symantec Millennium Action Response Team (SMART), a comprehensive,
worldwide program designed to provide real-time help to organizations with
Y2K-related issues. In the event of a Y2K crisis, SMART provides corporations
with easy access to expertise from the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC)
and Symantec's award-winning customer support organization, as well as extensive
information about Symantec's external and internal Y2K compliance initiatives.
"With the SMART program, customers have a comprehensive solution to a variety of
threats that may surface during the transition period to January 1, 2000," said
Dana Siebert, executive vice president of Worldwide Sales, Marketing and Services
at Symantec Corporation. "SMART offers customers peace of mind because they are
allied with a powerful partner who can provide expertise during this critical
time."
To help customers better understand the wide variety of Y2K issues and the
appropriate responses, Symantec has made an extensive library of relevant data
available through its SMART web site at www.symantec.com/y2K/y2K.html. This
one-stop resource center offers valuable information regarding Symantec's
Y2K-compliant software and testing criteria as well as answers to frequently
asked questions related to Y2K preparedness. In addition, customers can quickly
view a list of known malicious Y2K threats and hoaxes, access a virus activation
calendar, and reference Symantec's virus definition release schedule. The SMART
web site is available now.
In addition to Y2K compliance issues, Y2K viruses, worms, and other malicious
code represent an even more significant threat to system uptime and user
productivity. Symantec has made it easier for organizations to take advantage
of the unequaled expertise of SARC researchers and engineers. To ensure that
customers worldwide have immediate and uninterrupted protection against all virus
threats, SARC staff will be augmented during the Y2K weekend. This enhanced SARC
staff will maintain an around-the-clock work schedule during the transition to
the new year so that regardless of the day, hour, or volume of threats, Symantec
anti-virus experts will respond to virus crisises immediately.
Even during the holiday period, should a virus strike, customers can submit a
virus sample through the exclusive Scan and Deliver feature of Symantec products
or by direct e-mail submission. Symantec experts will analyze the virus and send
a swift response. Because Y2K threat control is part of Symantec's Anti-Virus
Research Center's ongoing support, there is no need to pay additional support
costs or sign up to maintain current protection.
As part of the SMART program, Symantec's award-winning support organization will
be on standby to provide greater levels of assistance to more consumer and
corporate customers during the critical period surrounding the millennium
changeover. The expanded support team is prepared for Y2K-related issues of all
levels of complexity, including viruses and hoaxes as well as non-compliant
software issues. Additionally, corporate support customers with Platinum and
NAVSolution contracts will be provided 24x7 access to service engineers and have
the option to receive proactive bulletin updates to assist in meeting their
critical business needs. Customers are also encouraged to visit Symantec's
support website at, www.service.symantec.com to learn more about Symantec's
subscription support services or to subscribe to Symantec's proactive Y2K
internet communications tool, Live Advisor.
In addition to easing the Year 2000 transition through unparalleled service and
support, Symantec also offers corporations a family of problem-solving solutions
to help resolve Year 2000 issues. With products such as Norton AntiVirus, Norton
2000, pcAnywhere, and Norton Ghost organizations have a complete toolset for
assessing Y2K preparedness as well as for providing Y2K remediation and
protection‹all from the market leader in anti-virus, remote control, and systems
utilities solutions.
