Symantec and Brightmail to Deliver Industry’s First Integrated Anti-virus, Anti-spam Solution for Service Providers
Integration To Provide Single, Easy to Manage Message Filtering Solution For More Robust ISP, ASP Offerings
CUPERTINO, Calif. April 11, 2000 -- Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) and Brightmail, Inc. today announced a partnership to provide the industry’s first integrated anti-virus and anti-spam solution for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Application Service Providers (ASPs). Symantec, a global leader in Internet security will integrate its award-winning anti-virus technology with Brightmail’s cutting-edge Anti-Spam Service. This combined solution is designed to reduce the costs associated with managing multiple messaging technologies and allow ISPs and ASPs to cost-effectively deliver robust e-mail protection and filtering to corporations and consumers worldwide.
Some of the world’s largest ISPs and ASPs already use Brightmail, including AT&T Worldnet and Mail.com. This integration will allow Internet and application service providers to leverage their investment in Brightmail by protecting their subscribers from viruses, Trojans and other malicious activity, as well as help maximize subscriber productivity by filtering unsolicted commercial e-mail or spam before it enters a subscriber’s in-box.
"Symantec is integrating its award-winning content-security technology into the server-side infrastructure to ensure a base-level of security for all Internet users," said John W. Thompson, Symantec chairman, president and CEO. "Partnering with Brightmail to deliver an integrated solution enables ISPs and ASPs to easily extend their e-mail infrastructure to include anti-virus as an added benefit for their subscribers and further protect them from malicious activity."
"Working with Symantec we will continue to offer a comprehensive solution for filtering products and services to greatly enhance the usability of e-mail," said Sunil Paul, founder and chairman of Brightmail, Inc. "This combined solution enables ISPs and ASPs to extend the Brightmail platform to differentiate their offering."
Viruses and mobile code transmitted in e-mail are becoming increasingly common and can literally shut down a business within minutes. Symantec’s anti-virus technology works at the gateway to provide fast, effective virus resolution for protecting the enterprise from rapidly-spreading, e-mail-borne viruses—with minimal impact on network performance. The integrated solution leverages the Brightmail Logistics and Operations Center (BLOC), Brightmail’s existing 24/7 anti-spam facilities, by providing real-time automated delivery and deployment of anti-virus engines and definitions, requiring no operator intervention to handle anti-virus updates.
Symantec’s anti-virus technology provides one of the industry’s fastest turnaround on unknown viruses with a new Quarantine Console, the latest scan engine and decomposers, and patented Symantec Scan and Deliver technology. Symantec Anti-virus Research Center (SARC) leverages these technologies to supports the product and as new computer viruses appear, SARC develops identification and detection for these viruses and provides either a repair or delete operation, thus keeping users protected against the latest virus threats.
Brightmail’s unique spam-fighting solution combines cutting-edge message-filtering software with a dedicated operations center staffed by people who are experts in identifying spam. These experts work around the clock to identify spam using the company’s probe network, a collection of millions of e-mail addresses that trap spam for analysis. The Brightmail spam-fighting solution is designed for ISPs and ASPs looking for a cost-effective reliable method of stopping spam from reaching their customers.
The integrated Symantec anti-virus/Brightmail solution is expected to be available to ASPs and ISPs in late Q2 2000. For more information on the solution go to www.brightmail.com.
