Symantec's Norton Leads Consumer Internet Security
and Problem-Solving Software Market
Norton Internet Security 2000 Becomes the First Internet Security Suite to Crack PC Data's Top 10 Best-Selling Business Software Titles with Norton AntiVirus and Norton SystemWorks
Coming in #1 and #3 Respectively
CUPERTINO, Calif. - May 3, 2000 -- Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that three Symantec solutions--Norton AntiVirus, Norton SystemWorks, and Norton Internet Security--have been named to PC Dataís list of the Top-Selling Business Software for March 2000. The inclusion of Norton Internet Security marks the first time an Internet Security Solution has made the prestigious short list. PC Data is the industry standard for providing accurate and timely information about PC software and hardware sales. PC Dataís list of Top-Selling Business Software in March is based on sales figures on units sold by 42 retail chains, representing more than 80 percent of the U.S. market.
"The exceptional demand for Norton AntiVirus, Norton SystemWorks, and now Norton Internet Security provides further evidence that Symantec continues to deliver solutions that address real-world customer needs in Internet security and problem-solving," said Steve Cullen senior vice president of Symantecís Consumer Products Division. "We are especially encouraged to see the large numbers of consumers turning to Norton Internet Security to take a proactive approach to ensuring the security and privacy of their information as well as the safety of their children while using the Internet."
PC Data uses a meticulous methodology to track the sales of every software, hardware, and video game SKU on the market; the company collects sales data directly from retail chains, mail-order firms, and resellers and combines the numbers into industry totals on a product-by-product basis. As a result, PC Data reports represent the most precise and reliable market research available for virtually every computer-related product sold.
According to PC Data figures, the Internet security category continued its meteoric growth while Norton Internet Security established a dominant position in the market. To put this into perspective, the March 2000 Quarter saw greater than a 205 percent increase in unit volume compared to the same quarter in 1999. Even more remarkable, the category saw more than 100 thousand units of Internet security products shipped in the March 2000 Quarter alone, almost totaling the entire category sales in 1999. Equally impressive, in its first quarter on the market, Norton Internet Security 2000 made up almost 50 percent of both the category units and revenue volume.
Norton AntiVirus and Norton SystemWorks are regularly named to the PC Data Top 10 Business Software list. Norton AntiVirus has made every list since January 1998. Norton SystemWorks took its place on the list in October 1998 and continues to remain on the list.
