Symantec Signs Agreement With Yahoo! To Provide Anti-Virus Technology For Yahoo! Mail
Symantec's Highly Scaleable Anti-Virus Technology Helps Protect Millions of Yahoo! Mail Users
From Viruses and Malicious Mobile Code
CUPERTINO, Calif. - May 16, 2000 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today
announced an agreement with Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO) to provide Symantec's
award-winning anti-virus technology to users of Yahoo!® Mail
(http://mail.yahoo.com), one of the Internet's most popular Web-based mail
services. Under the agreement, Symantec's carrier-class anti-virus technology
will be seamlessly integrated into Yahoo! Mail to provide millions of Yahoo! Mail
users with virus protection that will help them, and the friends and colleagues
they send file attachments to, guard against e-mail borne viruses and malicious
mobile code.
Starting immediately, Symantec's industry-leading anti-virus technology will scan
e-mail file attachments sent and received via Yahoo! Mail, part of Yahoo!'s
global communications platform. The carrier-class anti-virus technology will
automatically scan all Yahoo! Mail users' outgoing e-mails to protect them from
distributing file attachments containing viruses or malicious mobile code. To
ensure they do not receive virus-infected e-mails, Yahoo! Mail users can also
choose to have their incoming e-mail files scanned. When known viruses are
detected in an attachment, Symantec's anti-virus technology will instantly clean
the attachment, if possible, and, at the user's request, Yahoo! Mail will then
notify the sender that he or she sent a virus-infected attachment.
Yahoo! Mail users who would like additional virus protection can choose from a
full suite of Norton AntiVirus products from Symantec's online store, accessible
via Yahoo! Shopping (http://shopping.yahoo.com).
"A carrier-grade anti-virus solution at the Internet infrastructure level is a
critical component to stopping the rapid proliferation of e-mail borne attacks,"
said John W. Thompson, Symantec chairman, president and CEO. "By integrating
Symantec's anti-virus technology into Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! is taking proactive
measures to protect the millions of Yahoo! Mail users from the increasing threat
of viruses and malicious mobile code transmitted via e-mail. Our agreement
provides Yahoo! a highly scaleable, reliable solution to ensure that e-mail
traffic flowing into and out of Yahoo! Mail servers is safe and clean."
"Integrating Symantec's anti-virus technology into Yahoo! Mail provides another
valuable service for the millions of people using Yahoo! Mail and allows them to
send and receive virus-free e-mail," said Lisa Pollock, senior producer, Yahoo!
Inc. "Yahoo! Mail users can enjoy peace-of-mind knowing the attachments they send
and receive using Yahoo! Mail are protected by a leading provider of anti-virus
technology. We're very pleased to offer this new feature to our large audience."
Viruses and mobile code transmitted in e-mail are becoming increasingly common
and can literally shut down a home computer or business within minutes.
Symantec's anti-virus technology works at the gateway to provide fast, effective
virus resolution for protecting the enterprise from rapidly-spreading
e-mail-borne viruses‹with minimal impact on network performance and maximum
uptime.
Symantec's anti-virus technology provides one of the industry's fastest
turnaround times on unknown viruses with a new Quarantine Console, the latest
scan engine and decomposers, and Symantec's Scan and Deliver technology. As new
computer viruses appear, the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC) develops
identification and detection for these viruses and provides either a repair or
delete operation, thus keeping users protected against the latest virus threats.
Pricing and Availability
Seamlessly integrated into Yahoo! Mail, the Symantec anti-virus protection is
available immediately to Yahoo! Mail users at no charge.
