Symantec Security Expert to Address Dangers of Computer Worms at Gartner Group Information Security Conference

CUPERTINO, Calif. - June 5, 2000 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) a world leader in Internet security technology, today announced Carey Nachenberg, chief researcher of the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC), will speak at the Gartner Group conference -- Information Security in an E-Business World: Coping with the Threats. In Nachenbergís presentation today from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. in New Orleans, titled "The Decade of the Worm," he will address the key factors contributing to the recent rash of worldwide computer worms and identify specific policy decisions corporations can enforce to limit the spread of these threats.

"Today, our computing infrastructure is more vulnerable to fast-spreading computer viruses and worms," Nachenberg said. "Unfortunately, we expect these same threats to migrate to the next generation of mobile devices. As businesses depend more on connected mobile devices, it is critical that vendors engineer these devices with security in mind."

As chief researcher for SARC, Nachenberg is involved in the design and development of security technologies and has become recognized as a world-renowned expert on computer viruses and worms. Involved in the detection and control of recent computer viruses and worms -- specifically Melissa and LoveLetter -- Nachenberg develops security solutions to protect against dangerous computer threats.

Nachenberg has been with Symantec for nine years as a software engineer and architect for multiple Symantec products. In the last year and a half, Nachenberg has filed eight new patents and has received patents for three more on anti-virus technologies. Nachenberg co-authored three books, including Internet Security Professional Reference and Windows NT Server 4: Security, Troubleshooting and Optimization. He is a regular contributor to Virus Bulletin, Secure Computing, and Communications of the ACM and other major computer security journals. Nachenberg holds a bachelorís and a masterís degree in computer science and engineering from UCLA.
