Norton Internet Security Continues Rapid Rise On PC Data Top 10 List
Symantec Solution Defines and Drives Internet Security Market, Leading Unit and Revenue Share for Nine Consecutive Weeks
CUPERTINO, Calif. - June 12, 2000 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today
announced that Norton Internet Security 2000 is continuing its rapid rise on the
PC Data Top 10 Business Software list. According to April 2000 figures, Norton
Internet Security is currently the seventh best-selling business software in the
nation. While other Internet Security products have yet to crack the longer Top
20 list, Norton Internet Security skyrocketed to the prestigious Top 10 short
list in March 2000. PC Data figures for April show that Norton Internet Security
remains a best-seller, having maintained a 70 percent unit share and an 80
percent revenue share for the last nine consecutive weeks.
"We are pleased at the unparalleled popularity of Norton Internet Security, but
are even more pleased to know that thousands of consumers are now able to
maximize the power of the Web without being susceptible to its vulnerabilities,"
said Steve Cullen, senior vice president of Symantec's Consumer Products
Division.
PC Data figures demonstrate Norton Internet Security's role in defining, driving,
and capturing the Internet Security software category. Although products such as
McAfee GuardDog/Guard Dog Deluxe and SOS Best Defense entered the Internet
Security market before Norton Internet Security, it was only after the arrival of
Norton Internet Security in December 1999 that the market grew significantly.
According to PC Data, the Internet Security category grew 200 percent from Q499
to Q100. In Q100, more than half of all units and 74 percent of all revenue in
the growing category went to Norton Internet Security.
Norton Internet Security is also leading the competition among industry experts
and reviewers, as evidenced by a series of awards the product has received since
its introduction. Most recently, Norton Internet Security was named Editor's
Choice by CNET in a head-to-head review.
Three other Symantec products were named to the PC Data Top 10 list for April
2000: Norton AntiVirus 2000, Norton SystemWorks, and WinFax Pro. Norton AntiVirus
and Norton SystemWorks continued their hold on the number one and number three
spots, respectively. Norton AntiVirus has made every list since January 1998;
Norton SystemWorks has made every list since October 1998. WinFax Pro debuted in
April's Top 10 list at number 10, up four places from last month's rankings.
PC Data is the industry standard for providing accurate and timely information
about PC software and hardware sales. PC Data's list of Top-Selling Business
Software in April is based on sales figures on units sold by 42 retail chains,
representing more than 80 percent of the U.S. market. To ensure accuracy, the
company uses a meticulous methodology to track the sales of every software,
hardware, and video game SKU on the market. The company collects sales data
directly from retail chains, mail order firms, and resellers and combines the
numbers into industry totals on a product-by-product basis. As a result, PC Data
reports represent the most precise and reliable market research available for
virtually every computer-related product sold.
