Symantec Chief Technical Officer To Address The Black Hat Briefings

Moritz to Discuss Proactive Defense Against Malicious Code

CUPERTINO, Calif. -July 27, 2000 Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), a world leader in Internet security technology, today announced that Ron Moritz, chief technology officer at Symantec, will speak at the Black Hat Briefings on Thursday, July 27 in Las Vegas. During his session, Moritz will address Proactive Defense Against Malicious Code.

"Melissa, PrettyPark and the Explore.zip worms are all examples of malicious replicating code, designed to exploit the Internet for their rapid proliferation," Moritz said. "Allowing un-trusted code to execute on the corporate network may not be suitable for an organization, but corporate security policies that block network executables adversely affect the evolution of the Internet, extranet and intranet."

Anti-virus software is an important part of a well-devised security policy, but a complementary approach may be required to satisfy the demands that will be made on businesses engaged in e-commerce. During his presentation, Moritz will discuss proactive defense against malicious code attacks that corporations require today.

The Black Hat Briefings bring together leading security experts to provide in-depth discussions on the vital security issues facing organizations with large enterprise networks and mixed network operating systems. The conference, which runs July 26-27, provides computer professionals with information to better understand the security risks to their computer and information infrastructures. This year the conference includes a separate track, developed by the National Computer Security Center, for the CEO and CIO.

Moritz is an Internet security expert with more than 15 years in the industry. He currently chairs the Common Content Inspection API interoperability standardization initiative for the security industry. He has published and presented numerous papers on a variety of security topics including mobile code security, web browser security, security and electronic commerce, and computer ethics and privacy. The International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium has certified Moritz as an information systems security professional.
