Symantec Awarded Contract
to Secure US Navy/Marine Corps Intranet
CUPERTINO, Calif. - April 25, 2001 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), a world leader in Internet security technology, today announced it has been awarded a contract from the EDS/Raytheon team to help secure the U.S. Navy/Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI). Under terms of the agreement, Symantec will provide a significant portion of the security components including firewall, virus protection, content filtering, vulnerability assessment, and intrusion detection solutions to safeguard the onshore technology services for Department of the Navy civilians, sailors and Marines using NMCI.
"We recognize that a key factor in the success of NMCI is the vendor partnerships and quality of solutions we implement," said Tim Bashara, NMCI program director for Raytheon Co.'s Secure Networks. "To that end, NMCI is carefully selecting best-of-breed solutions from world-class companies such as Symantec to deliver secure voice, video and data services at a lower cost which, in turn, enables us to meet our e-government goals."
Under a subcontract from EDS, Raytheon is responsible for the overall network security and information assurance of the NMCI. In implementing NMCI, EDS and Raytheon will utilize a full complement of Symantec security solutions, including Norton AntiVirus, I-Gear, Mail-Gear, Intruder Alert, NetProwler, Enterprise Security Manager, Expert, Retriever, and Raptor Firewall. According to Raytheon, these products will enable the staff at Navy and Marine Corps bases across the United States to provide secure, universal access to integrated communications services.
"Our involvement in NMCI is evidence of Symantec's global leadership in providing the most comprehensive and powerful security solutions for both public and private enterprises," said Vince Steckler, vice president, Public Sector at Symantec. "We are pleased to be chosen to participate in a major intranet initiative of this scale and look forward to contributing our unique security expertise and cutting-edge products to safeguard data and systems throughout the Navy and Marine Corps."
With Norton AntiVirus at each desktop, NMCI will have automatic protection against viruses and other malicious code as well as centralized anti-virus policy management to facilitate administration and enhance security. Norton AntiVirus is the only anti-virus software to include sophisticated technologies such as LiveUpdate, NAVEX, and Scan and Deliver and to be supported by security experts at the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC).
To secure the perimeter of NMCI and maximize security without compromising performance, NMCI will use the Symantec Raptor Firewall and the Prowler series of intrusion detection network and host based technologies. NetProwler will fortify NMCI's e-business initiatives by offering dynamic network intrusion detection that transparently examines network traffic, instantly identifying, logging, and terminating unauthorized use, misuse, and abuse of computer systems by internal saboteurs and external hackers.
I-Gear and Mail-Gear will provide NMCI with industry-leading Internet content and e-mail filtering software to help ensure the productivity of users while making it easier to enforce Internet usage policies throughout the Navy and Marine Corps.
With Symantec's Enterprise Security Manager, Expert and Retriever, NMCI will have a comprehensive toolset for vulnerability assessment and management. ESM is the only security solution to define, manage, and enforce e-security policies with one enterprise-wide security management solution, thereby enabling NMCI to confidently conduct secure e-business with customers and partners worldwide. Expert is the first network risk analysis tool that can measure and manage enterprise security risk and perform meaningful business impact analysis. Retriever is a proactive network security management tool that automatically discovers and maps network components, unobtrusively identifies vulnerabilities, provides safeguard and policy recommendations, and performs customizable network audits.
