University at Buffalo Standardizes on Symantec's Norton AntiVirus
CUPERTINO, Calif. – May 16, 2001 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that the University at Buffalo has standardized on Symantec's Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition. Named the 11th Most Wired University in 2000 by Yahoo!, the University at Buffalo relies on Norton AntiVirus to secure 24x7 high-speed Internet access for its 26,000 students, faculty, and staff both on and off campus.
The University at Buffalo delivers state-of-the-art computing capabilities to students in class, in labs, in residence halls, at the library, and even off campus. Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition provides the University with enterprise-class protection for their widespread network. The University also uses Symantec System Center to manage all Norton AntiVirus platforms from a single centralized location.
"The University at Buffalo is a highly visible institution and our credibility as a technology leader is on the line every day," said JoAnn Greenzweig, associate director of Academic Services in the Department of Computing and Information Technology at the University at Buffalo. "As a result, it is imperative that we use the most effective and reliable hardware and software products available. Norton AntiVirus has proven to be outstanding, and we recommend it to organizations looking for a high-quality anti-virus package."
According to Greenzweig, the University selected Norton AntiVirus because of its consistent high performance, reliability, administrative tools, and ease-of-use. Greenzweig also singled out Symantec's LiveUpdate component as a valuable product differentiator that enables the University to ensure that all students, faculty, and staff have the most up-to-date virus definitions.
As evidence of the effectiveness of Norton AntiVirus, Greenzweig pointed to the University's continued ability to remain unaffected by such widespread threats as the Melissa and Anna Kournikova viruses as well as other rapidly spreading malicious code. "When Melissa hit, we were able to reassure the public over the 11 o'clock news that the University had not been impacted, thanks to Norton AntiVirus," said Greenzweig. "The recent Anna virus also posed no threat to the University because Norton AntiVirus was continually detecting and eliminating all virus-related activity, effectively protecting us from infection."
The University uses a variety of delivery mechanisms to distribute Norton AntiVirus to its students, faculty, and staff. In addition to making the product available for download from a secure University web site, the University also offers Norton AntiVirus on its Tech Tools CD, a compilation of networking and communications software designed to enable students and faculty to maximize their use of technology.
Founded in 1846, the University at Buffalo is New York's premier public center for graduate and professional education and the state's largest and most comprehensive public university.
