Symantec Sweeps PC Magazine Editors' Choice Awards

Norton SystemWorks, Norton AntiVirus, Norton Ghost Dominate 2001 Ultimate Utilities Guide

CUPERTINO, Calif. - June 18, 2001 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced the company swept the annual PC Magazine utility face-off, earning the coveted Editors' Choice designation in the June 2001 Ultimate Utilities Guide for Norton SystemWorks, Norton AntiVirus and Norton Ghost. Named the best utility suite, anti-virus software, and disk imaging solutions, respectively, the Symantec products were singled out for characteristics including exceptional performance, reliability, flexibility and ease-of-use.

"Like Symantec, PC Magazine has a solid reputation for identifying and addressing the real issues facing PC users every day," said Steve Cullen, senior vice president of Symantec's Consumer Product and Client Delivery. "Consequently, it is a noteworthy honor to see our Norton line of utility solutions consistently recognized by PC Magazine as providing consumers and small businesses the tools they need to make their computers faster, safer, and more reliable."

In naming Norton SystemWorks 2001 the top-performing suite, PC Magazine editors wrote, "For a suite to be beneficial, its separate components should complement one another and be integrated through a central control panel that provides quick access to individual tools. But we found that not all of the suites succeed at offering this, and ironically, they may cause more harm than good . . . Symantec, however, has done a first-rate job of melding its individual utilities into a single suite . . . Ultimately, [the Editors' Choice pick] came down to performance, and Norton SystemWorks won."

Norton AntiVirus 2001 again outperformed competitors to earn a fifth consecutive PC Magazine Editors' Choice awardčan accomplishment unmatched by any other anti-virus product. "An anti-virus program is the one utility you must havečbut not just any anti-virus will do," editors wrote. "Anti-virus programs are essential, so our expectations were especially high for these products. A good anti-virus utility should safeguard you from any virus-like threat, be easy to use, and keep virus definitions up-to-date as unobtrusively as possiblečall without placing a burden on the system. Norton AntiVirus 2001 meets all these criteria."

PC Magazine editors cited superior usability and flexibility as key factors in selecting Norton Ghost 2001 as the top-performing disk imaging utility. "Norton Ghost is the most flexible program for imaging and cloning disks and partitions. The program's extra drive and OS support also help it edge out [competitors]. But its ability to move images to different computers overwhelms the competition."

Norton SystemWorks is the smartest way to keep a computer working. It includes Norton AntiVirus, to protect PCs against viruses; Norton Utilities, to optimize system performance; and Norton CleanSweep, to remove Internet clutter. Norton SystemWorks 2001 also provides convenient links to online services through Norton Web Services and Symantec Web Partners.

Norton AntiVirus is the world's leading anti-virus software. Norton AntiVirus works in the background to protect systems, automatically sensing an open Internet connection, then checking, retrieving, and installing the latest virus definition updates to ensure that users have the most up-to-date protection. It also scans e-mail attachments and files downloaded from the Web. The exclusive Script Blocking technology in Norton AntiVirus proactively detects and stops fast-moving script-based viruses such as the I Love You and Anna Kournikova viruses, without the need for virus definitions. With Script Blocking technology and automatic LiveUpdate, Norton AntiVirus users are uniquely protected against known and unknown virus threats.

Norton Ghost provides high-performance utilities for fast and safe system upgrading, backup, and recovery. With support for both Windows and Linux systems, Norton Ghost writes disk images directly to many popular CDR/RW drives and clones quickly from PC to PC.
