Symantec Corporation Forms Alliance With EMC, the World Leader in Information Storage
Symantec's Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition Provides Award-Winning Anti-virus Solution For EMC Celerra File Server
CUPERTINO, Calif. - Oct. 9, 2001 - Symantec Corp. (SYMC-NASDAQ), a world leader in Internet security, today announced an alliance with EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) through its E-Infostructure Developers Program. EMC's enterprise-level network attached storage (NAS) offering, Celerra File Server, is now interoperable with Symantec's Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition 7.51, providing an essential secure layer of anti-virus protection for customers.
"Ensuring all files are free of viruses before being placed in an enterprise storage system is essential to prevent re-infection and protect the network infrastructure." said Lily De Los Rios, vice president, Symantec Product Delivery and Response. "The patented technology behind Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition, along with Symantec's response capability, combine to provide EMC customers with robust and efficient anti-virus protection and will maintain the integrity of their enterprise digital assets."
Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition includes many features unique to Symantec:
- Digital Immune System This Web-based closed-loop automation technology is designed to quickly and automatically handle outbreaks caused by today's rapidly spreading Internet-borne viruses.
- LiveUpdate - Symantec provides customers with a quick and easy way to receive the most up-to-date virus definitions, even in the event of a virus crisis. Using its NAVEX technology the virus definition and scan engine updates are sent in one delivery to minimize system impact. NAVEX engine updates do not require redeployment of the solution or reboot of mission critical desktops and file servers.
- Scalability - Multi-tiered architecture allows Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition to be highly scalable, load balanced and suitable for LAN/WAN environments.
- Central Management - Unlike competing products, Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition's management console supports multiple platforms including Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows 9x and NetWare.
- Award Winning - Virus Bulletin has given Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition its VB 100% detection award 14 times since May 1998 and its CheckMark award nine times in a row.
"Offering our customers virus protection for their information assets is of paramount importance to EMC," said Don Swatik, vice president of Alliances and Information Sciences, EMC Corporation. "As a member of the E-Infostructure Developers Program, Symantec is a highly trusted source that our customers can rely on for anti-virus protection for their Celerra File Servers."
EMC's Celerra File Server features a virus protection agent, Celerra Anti-Virus Solution, which coordinates file management with one or more external servers running anti-virus scanning software. When the Celerra File Server receives a file, it sends a request to the anti-virus scanning server or servers to examine the file before committing it to storage. If the file is infected, the anti-virus scanning server takes appropriate action as defined by parameters set by the administrator. Examples include cleaning the file of the virus before committing the file to storage, deleting the file, or sending the infected file to a quarantine area for subsequent processing.
