Symantec Security Check Attracts More Than 6 Million Online Computer Users Worldwide
Increase of Blended Internet Security Threats Drives Thousands To Free Online Vulnerability Assessment Tool
CUPERTINO, Calif. - Oct. 10, 2001 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), a world leader in Internet security, today announced that more than 6 million consumers worldwide have utilized Symantec Security Check, www.symantec.com/securitycheck, to identify and address online safety threats on their home PC and Macintosh computers. The free Web-hosted vulnerability assessment tool provides users with easy-to-understand information on potential security risks from viruses, hackers and privacy threats and offers recommendations for securing their computers against those risks.
"Ensuring all files are free of viruses before being placed in an enterprise storage system is essential to prevent re-infection and protect the network infrastructure." said Lily De Los Rios, vice president, Symantec Product Delivery and Response. "The patented technology behind Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition, along with Symantec's response capability, combine to provide EMC customers with robust and efficient anti-virus protection and will maintain the integrity of their enterprise digital assets."
"Reaching the 6 million user milestone illustrates to us that consumers continue to be concerned about the growing number of privacy and security threats on their home PCs," said Steve Cullen, senior vice president, Symantec Consumer and Client Product Delivery. "We are responding to those concerns by offering Symantec Security Check free to users around the globe as part of our continued commitment to supplying consumers with an innovative line of Internet security solutions to help cultivate both a safe and productive online experience."
In conjunction with the continued rise in global popularity and visibility, Symantec Security Check has incorporated a new, sleek Web site design with emphasis on ease-of-use. The new look and feel combines high-resolution graphics with quick and easy links that allow users to rapidly test their computers for vulnerabilities when connected to the Internet, and then view and print results immediately, as well as compare those results to those of other users.
"Symantec Security Check quickly identified a virus on my machine and provided excellent suggestions to safeguard against future risks," said Jaunulyn Naegele, a mathematics teacher. "The service is a very effective tool for someone like me who frequently connects to the Internet."
Symantec Security Check tests include a network vulnerability scan and a NetBIOS availability scan to assess vulnerability to hackers; an anti-virus software check, anti-virus definition check, and active Trojan application scan to assess susceptibility to the latest virus threats; and a browser information check that provides instructions, if necessary, on how to safeguard privacy. Once the scans are completed, Symantec Security Check provides users with a comprehensive list of results and concise recommendations to secure their computers against online security threats.
Users of Symantec Security Check are also given the option of voluntarily submitting the results of their system scans to be used for overall vulnerability assessment purposes. Thus far, the results of 390,723 submitted scans reveal that 36 percent of users have computers that allow unknown or unauthorized Internet communication; 44 percent do not have a recent version of a commonly used anti-virus product; and 79 percent use Web browsers that release information about the site they last visited to other Web sites without their knowledge.
