Symantec Security Expert to Speak at UCLA Wireless Conference

CUPERTINO, Calif. - November 7, 2001- Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), a world leader in Internet security, today announced that Carey Nachenberg, chief architect of the Symantec Security Response team, will participate in a panel discussion at the Wireless Internet, Data and Enterprise Applications conference at the University of California, Los Angeles on November 8, 2001. This wireless Internet conference covers a complete range of strategic business, technical, sales, marketing, and customer-centric issues that must be understood in order for businesses to capitalize on mobile commerce.

Nachenberg and his fellow panelists will explore the risks and security issues of conducting business over the wireless medium. "When people think of wireless security, their primary concern is encrypting the transmission as it travels through the wireless infrastructure." Nachenberg said. "In truth, encryption is only the tip of the iceberg. Corporations need to deploy appropriate security solutions, from firewalls to anti-virus software, from servers all the way to cell-phones, to ensure the safety of wireless transactions."

Carey Nachenberg is one of the world's top computer virus experts. An innovator at Symantec for the past 10 years, he currently designs and develops anti-virus, content-security and vulnerability assessment technology for Symantec's award-winning line of products. Nachenberg holds nine patents in the security space and has contributed to four books including Internet Security Professional Reference and Windows NT Server 4: Security, Troubleshooting and Optimization. Adept at conveying complex information in an accessible fashion, Nachenberg is a regular contributor to such major computer security journals as Virus Bulletin, Secure Computing, and Communications of the ACM. Nachenberg holds BS and MS degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from University of California at Los Angeles. His Masters thesis covers the topic of polymorphic computer virus detection.

The Wireless Internet, Data and Enterprise Applications conference features over 50 lectures and six keynotes by experts in wireless technology from industry, academia and research establishments. The principal topics include broadband wireless, voice integration on data networks, location based services, multi-media applications, telematics, security, and quality of service.
