Symantec's Norton Personal Firewall Only Product Certified by ICSA on Multiple Operating Systems

CUPERTINO, Calif. - November 20, 2001-Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that Norton Personal Firewall is the only product to earn ICSA Labs PC Firewall Certification on multiple Windows platforms. ICSA Labs PC Firewall Certification assures users that Norton Personal Firewall delivers the reliability, performance, and usability required to effectively resist attacks in a hostile environment. Norton Personal Firewall alone was certified for Microsoft Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT Workstation, and Windows 2000 Professional. Norton Personal Firewall combines rule-based firewall, application control, and intrusion protection capabilities to protect PC users from online security threats.

"Online security has never been more important than it is today," said Steve Cullen, senior vice president of Symantec Consumer and Client Product Delivery. "A personal firewall is a critical component of Internet security for consumers. Symantec is pleased to provide a personal firewall solution that has passed extreme testing from an industry authority and been shown to deny the attacks and vulnerabilities encountered in real-world situations."

"Norton Personal Firewall was one of the first PC firewalls to receive ICSA Certification and the only solution to earn it on multiple Windows platforms," said Larry Bridwell, content security program manager for ICSA Labs, an independent division of TruSecure Corp. "This Certification demonstrates that Norton Personal Firewall provides solid protection not only for Windows 2000 systems but also for Windows 98, Windows Me, and Windows NT users."

The objective of the ICSA Labs PC Firewall Certification Program is to make available to users a selection of products that provide essential security services. According to the company, an ICSA-certified PC firewall product must prove that it can provide protection for the host on which it is deployed under normal business usage. The firewall also must offer functional control for concurrently active local Ethernet and dial-up networks; maintain consistent protection across multiple successive dial-up connections; protect common external network attacks; provide for restriction of outgoing network communication; and log events in a consistent and useful manner. After careful testing and assessment, ICSA Labs validated the effectiveness of Norton Personal Firewall in providing all of these critical security services across multiple Windows platforms.

ICSA Labs is a division of TruSecure Corp. and the security industry's central authority for product standards and testing. The independent organization today certifies more than 95 percent of the security industry's anti-virus software, PC and network firewalls, cryptography, and IPSec products.
