Los Angeles County Partners With Symantec for Internet Security

County Establishes An Enterprise AntiVirus Agreement With Symantec To Provide Protection Throughout All Tiers Of Their Network

CUPERTINO, Calif. - Jan. 17, 2002- Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that Los Angeles County (LAC) has partnered with Symantec to provide Internet security solutions and managed security services at all tiers of the county's network.

Under terms of the agreement, LAC will use Symantec antivirus solutions and Symantec Managed Security Services to protect against malicious code at all virus entry points -- the desktop, server and gateway - and to safeguard the integrity of LAC's systems and data. Los Angeles County covers some 800 square miles, larger than the combined area of the states of Delaware and Rhode Island. With a population of nearly 10 million people and 88 cities within its boundaries, LAC has the second largest public health system in the nation.

As a customer of Symantec Managed Security Services, security experts will provide LAC with live, round-the-clock support to ensure both proactive and reactive protection against current and emerging threats.

"Los Angeles County is dedicated to meeting the needs of its citizens as efficiently and effectively as possible," said Jon Fullinwider, chief information officer, Los Angeles County. "To that end, it is critical that we use the most intelligent and powerful tools available to maintain the security of our information systems infrastructure. Symantec enterprise security solutions and world-class support services make for an impressive ally in Los Angeles County's ongoing commitment to protect the assets with which we have been entrusted."

LAC's selection of Symantec was based on each product's ability to thwart security breaches as well as on the unique expertise made available through Symantec service and support professionals. Symantec Security Services carefully developed an information security plan specifically for LACčincorporating best-of-breed technology, extended support and managed security services to meet its needs. By delivering effective products, consulting and technical support, as well as ongoing 24X7 Internet security management, Symantec is providing LAC the comprehensive enterprise security solution it requires.

"LAC is responsible for scores of systems that are vital to citizens throughout the county," said Gail Hamilton, Symantec executive vice president. "Consequently, the information infrastructure of LAC must remain secure and functioning at all times. Symantec solutions and services will be instrumental in helping to provide a safe computing environment for LAC as it works with other government agencies and partners to better serve the public."

Provided on a subscription basis, Symantec Managed Security Services deliver cost-effective, outsourced security that minimizes an organization's investments in technology and internal resources while effectively solving security problems and allowing enterprises to focus on their core business issues. Symantec's Security Operations Centers provides true round-the-clock monitoring with analysts able to respond to critical incidents within two minutes, as opposed to remote staff on beepers common to other companies. Among the services offered are intrusion detection and response, Internet vulnerability, security policy compliance, anti-virus, and firewall and VPN management.

Symantec's Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition is a key component of Symantec Enterprise Security, which provides any size organization with the technology, global response and services necessary to manage its information security. Symantec's comprehensive solution offers best-of-breed products to protect gateways, servers, and clients with virus protection, firewall security, intrusion detection and vulnerability management. Symantec Enterprise Security also includes the Digital Immune System, Symantec's unique technology for automatic detection and cure of security threats.
