Symantec Surpasses Competition as a CRN Channel Champion
Rated Top Vendor in Firewall and AntiVirus Divisions
CUPERTINO, Calif. - March 20, 2002 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced the company has been named a CRN Channel Champion in two divisions of the survey. Symantec outperformed six competitors in the security products category to receive first place honors in the firewall and antivirus divisions. The company also earned an honorable mention in the intrusion detection space giving Symantec awards in all applicable categories. The survey results were announced Thursday, March 14, at the CMP Solution Provider XChange conference in New Orleans.

With leading security solutions in the firewall, antivirus, and intrusion categories, Symantec outscored the competition in 21 of 33 criteria within the security products category.
"Champions were the vendors that delivered superior technology backed by superior support for channel partners. They were also the vendors that endured," said John Longwell, managing editor of CRN Magazine in an "Editor's Letter" that accompanies articles detailing Channel Champion winners in the March 18th issue. "While hot products come and go, Channel Champions stand the test of time.".
Symantec Firewall solutions recognized for customer-friendly features
"The ease of management and implementation of Symantec's Enterprise Firewall led the vendor to a CRN Channel Champions crown in firewalls," wrote Amy Rogers, Washington bureau chief at CRN. She continued, "Symantec did particularly well in the technical areas."
Symantec also received the highest rating for price/performance, outscoring Cisco Systems, Microsoft and Check Point Software Technologies. Symantec also took top scores in four of six channel criteria, including return on investment, profitability, marketing support and field sales support.
Symantec's AntiVirus solutions takes a strong victory
Dominating the antivirus division, Symantec's Norton AntiVirus came away with top marks in 10 of 11 technical and channel criteria.
"Symantec earned impressive marks for the ease of management of its Norton AntiVirus software and sailed to an easy victory," wrote Christina Torode, senior editor at CRN. While Symantec swept all four technical criteria (product quality, ease of management, speed of product upgrades and price/performance), its highest winning margin of 15 points came in the ease of management criteria.
Symantec edged out the competition in six of the seven channel criteria, taking top ratings in technical support, return on investment, profitability, marketing support, training and certification and field sales support. The company won against Trend Micro, Network Associates and Computer Associates in the antivirus division.
Symantec intrusion detection offerings outscore competition in technical area
For the intrusion detection division, Symantec was named winner in the technical area and among large solution providers. The company edged out Cisco and Internet Security Systems in the technical criteria of price/performance and ease of management as well as the channel criteria of profitability and return on investment. For its overall champion rating, Symantec garnered a score of 72.9, less than a point less than the winner in the category.
CRN Channel Champions
The annual CRN Channel Champion survey is the largest solution provider market study. Now in its 11th year, the publication polled more than 2,270 solution providers via phone between November 2001 and January 2002. Solution providers rated vendors, chosen according to CRN recommendations and market share data, in 20 product and service categories. Within these categories, vendors were rated on eight to 12 criteria, depending on the category. In addition, solution providers were asked to rate the importance of criteria in each category.
CRN editors said survey results reveal product quality and reliability is the most important criterion for solution providers when evaluating vendors.
