Symantec CTO to Discuss E-Business Security and Best Practices at NetSec 2002 Conference
CUPERTINO, Calif. - June 17, 2002 Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that Norton AntiVirus 2002 and Norton SystemWorks 2002 have been designated World Class Award winners by PC World magazine. Norton AntiVirus 2002 is the most trusted antivirus software for home users, professionals, and small businesses. Norton SystemWorks 2002 is Symantec's best-of-breed problem-solving suite that offers a comprehensive, integrated solution set to help keep PCs running at optimal performance levels.
The World Class Award winners, recognized in the July 2002 issue of PC World magazine, were selected from the year's best hardware, software, and sites. "Our choices embody the best mix of performance, value, consistency, and innovation," editors wrote. "Norton SystemWorks meets your utility needs, including file recovery, disk scanning, and antivirus . . . Also tops in our tests was Symantec's Norton AntiVirus 2002, a fine choice for PC virus protection."
"Because the results of this annual event are widely recognized as a trusted source of intelligent and reliable information for PC users, Symantec is honored that Norton AntiVirus and Norton SystemWorks have been singled out as recipients of PC World's celebrated 20th World Class Awards," said Steve Cullen, senior vice president, Consumer and Client Product Delivery at Symantec. "We remain committed to serving the PC community by developing exceptional solutions to the most challenging computing problems."
In their review of Norton AntiVirus 2002 earlier in the year, PC World editors noted that the product "deserved its excellent reputation." Editors praised the software for its effectiveness in protecting against worms, Trojan horses, ActiveX controls, Java applets, malicious Word and Excel macros, e-mail borne viruses, and more.
In addition, editors singled out several features and components of Norton AntiVirus 2002 that fortify protection and improve usability, including Automatic LiveUpdate, which automatically downloads remedies to protect against the latest viruses; a bootable CD, which eases the recovery of data after a virus infection; Script Blocking, which guards against fast-moving script-based threats such as the I Love You and Anna Kournikova viruses; AutoProtect, which works in the background to detect viruses in attachments before they can cause trouble; comprehensive and schedulable scans, which scan hard drives as well as incoming attachments manually or on a predefined schedule; and integration with Windows Explorer, which makes it convenient for users to perform antivirus software functions from within the Explorer menu.
Editors also recommended Norton SystemWorks 2002 to users in an earlier review in PC World magazine. "If you don't have a utility suite on your PC, it's time to consider getting one since Norton SystemWorks, the best package available, just got better," they wrote. Editors explained that the suite keeps PCs out of trouble by detecting problems early and providing the tools to fix those problems. Norton SystemWorks 2002 includes Norton AntiVirus, to protect PCs against viruses; Norton Utilities, to optimize system performance; Norton CleanSweep, to clean out Internet clutter, GoBack by Roxio, to ease system recovery; Norton Web Services, to facilitate access to PC application updates; and Symantec Web Partners, to provide convenient access to online problem-solving services.
The World Class awards are only the latest in a series of awards that Norton AntiVirus and Norton SystemWorks have earned. In addition to being designated PC Magazine Editors' Choice, Norton AntiVirus has been selected as CNET Editor's Choice, and PC World's Best Buy. Norton SystemWorks, in turn, has been named Editor's Choice by Fortune/CNET Technology Review and was a designated Best Buy.
