IDC Ranks Symantec as Western Europes' leading Internet Security Company
Symantec is "the new undisputed European security software champion" says IDC
CUPERTINO, Calif. - July 1, 2002 Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that a report by industry analyst firm IDC ranks Symantec as the leading provider of Internet security solutions in Western Europe. The IDC report calls Symantec "the new undisputed European security software champion," with 10 percent market share.
Entitled "Western European Security Software Forecast and Analysis 2001 - 2006" (IDC #IS02J), the report analyzes five core Internet security markets and ranks companies' performance in each of them: Firewall/VPN, Secure Content Management, Intrusion Detection/Vulnerability Assessment, 3A security software, and Encryption software.
Thomas Raschke, program manager of IDC's European Internet Security Center and author of the report, says: "Symantec has emerged as the Internet security vendor that is able to offer solutions that cover virtually all sectors of a very dynamic threat environment.. The modern cyber-threat is hybrid, malicious and often designed to attack an organization at different points. Companies need to take a holistic view of Internet security and vendors have to strive to match complex blended threats with flexible, inter-operable solutions."
According to the report, Symantec's revenue in Western Europe grew 22 percent in the calendar year 2001 over 2000. IDC reports that the overall market in Western Europe grew 27.3 percent to $1.6 billion. IDC noted that it expects the market to grow 17 percent CAGR and reach $4.5 billion by the year 2006.
"Market growth will increase as enterprises continue to open access to more data by employees, partners and customers. Corporations will look for security solutions that are centrally managed and can address both cost and security concerns," the report states.
Commenting on the IDC report, Giuseppe Verrini, Symantec's vice president, sales, marketing and services Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: "This report clearly demonstrates Symantec's ability to provide effective and manageable solutions to companies and enterprise of all sizes not only in Europe, but across the world. Of the five market categories in IDC's report, Symantec competes in three of them and is the outright leader in two (Intrusion Detection and Vulnerability Assessment and Secure Content Management)."
In the Secure Content Management category, the second largest segment in the security software market, Symantec led with 21 percent market share and 21 percent growth, according to the report. In the Intrusion Detection and Vulnerability Assessment segment, the segment with the highest growth rate over the last year, Symantec led with 19 percent market share and 41 percent growth.
