Symantec's Norton AntiVirus 2002 Wins Editors' Choice in CNET Roundup

Norton AntiVirus Bests Field of 10 to be Named 'Best in the Biz'

CUPERTINO, Calif. - July 23, 2002 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that Norton AntiVirus 2002 bested a field of 10 to be named Editors' Choice by CNET, the renowned global source of information and commerce services for the technology industry. According to the July 3, 2002 online review, Norton AntiVirus earned the highest score in CNET's comprehensive product roundup of the top antivirus solutions.

"It is an honor to have Norton AntiVirus 2002 named Editors' Choice by CNET, one of the most widely recognized and respected sources for credible product information," said Steve Cullen, senior vice president, Consumer and Client Product Delivery at Symantec. "With this win, Symantec again confirms its support and commitment to providing effective solutions that safeguard users' technology investments."

"For its ease and unparalleled track record at stopping viruses that are in the wild, we like Norton AntiVirus 2002," CNET editors wrote. "There's no better virus killer than Norton AntiVirus."

Pointing to the unprecedented number of consecutive Virus Bulletin 100% awards that Norton AntiVirus has earned, as well as to the results of their own CNET virus tests, editors praised Norton AntiVirus 2002 as the "best virus checker" in the group. Reviewers also commented, "We're just as impressed by how deftly Norton AntiVirus squashes bugs. Norton AntiVirus 2002 automatically repairs an infected file (or if it can't, it quarantines the file), and alerts you only after it's both found and fixed the problem. This may sound like a minor point, but for beginners, it's reassuring to know that the software has already taken care of the job."

Editors also recognized automatic LiveUpdate as a valuable component of Norton AntiVirus 2002 to protect computers against new viruses. Automatic LiveUpdate regularly checks the Symantec Web site for updated virus definitions whenever the user is online, then downloads available virus definition updates and installs them in the background. In addition, reviewers remarked on the low impact that Norton AntiVirus 2002 has on system performance as well as on its lead as the first antivirus solution to support Windows XP.

Editors noted that Norton AntiVirus 2002 showcases a new, simple interface and provides additional protection against e-mail and script-based viruses. This streamlined interface sports a panel of self-explanatory indicators that clue users into what is going on with their systems. In addition, Norton AntiVirus 2002 requires little configuration—a fact that beginners appreciate, editors added.

Reviewers also pointed out that while Norton AntiVirus 2002 includes the same powerful set of antivirus, anti-Trojan Horse tools as its predecessor, it also introduces new, valuable protection capabilities, including scanning for viruses in outgoing email attachments, Script-Blocking to guard against fast-spreading script-based threats even before a virus definition is available, and tight integration with Windows Explorer to make virus protection more convenient and quick.

Norton AntiVirus is also an integral component of Symantec's market-leading Internet security and problem-solving suites, Norton Internet Security and Norton SystemWorks.
