Symantec Norton Internet Security 2003 Named PC Magazine Editors' Choice
Suite Outperforms All Competitors, Including McAfee and ZoneAlarm, in Extensive Tests
CUPERTINO, Calif. -- Dec. 16, 2002 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that Norton Internet Security 2003 was named Editors' Choice by PC Magazine. In extensive testing of the most popular software firewalls, Norton Internet Security 2003 outperformed all competitors, including Zone Labs' ZoneAlarm, McAfee.com's Personal Firewall, and Network Associates' McAfee Internet Security. Test results were published in the November 19 issue of the magazine. Norton Internet Security 2003 features Symantec's best-of-breed firewall, intrusion detection, spam filtering, privacy control, antivirus, and content filtering technologies in a single, easy-to-use suite.
Earlier in the year, the 2002 version of Norton Internet Security not only earned the Editors' Choice designation by PC Magazine but it was also named to PC Magazine's prestigious Best of 2001 short list of the top products of the year.
"Internet protection is no longer optional for consumers and home computer users," said Steve Cullen, senior vice president, Consumer and Client Product Delivery at Symantec. "With more and more users going online with greater frequency and for longer periods of time, security is now a priority. As a result, Symantec is pleased that Norton Internet Security 2003 has again been named the best Internet security product available. We are also gratified that PC Magazine continues to help users understand Internet security concerns and solutions in an effort to protect them against current and emerging threats."
According to reviewers, an effective software firewall should not only protect against sophisticated Internet threats, but it should also be easy to set up and use—a challenge even for experts, they added. "Norton Internet Security 2003, however, gets the nod for Editors' Choice, thanks to its handy setup wizards and its ability to understand your network and your applications—possibly better than you do. And this firewall's rich set of features, including ad blocking, spam filtering, and of course, Norton AntiVirus, makes it an extremely appealing package."
PC Magazine Labs' rigorous tests evaluated each product for installation and configuration, administration, ease-of-use, antivirus features, filtering, and support. Norton Internet Security 2003 surpassed each competitor to earn the top overall score. Reviewers highlighted the suite's easy installation on a network, including home networks, as well as its convenient Program Scan feature, which allows users to check for all Internet-enabled applications and grant Internet access "in one fell swoop." Reviewers also commended the suite's Alert Assistant, explaining that it "provides the best information of any of the firewalls in our roundup."
In addition, reviewers singled out Norton Internet Security 2003's intrusion detection system, Norton Privacy Control, and Norton Parental Control features as well as its market-leading antivirus component. "The complete suite adds perennial favorite Norton AntiVirus, Symantec's product for stopping viruses, Trojan horses, and malicious script attacks; it is among the best antivirus products on the market." Reviewers also applauded the inclusion of a link to Symantec Security Check, calling the service "a terrific tool" that allows users to test the configuration of their firewall to ensure they are adequately protected. Symantec Security Check is Symantec's free online security-checking Web site; to date, more than 30 million users have utilized the free service to secure their systems.
