Recipient of Symantec Fellowship Named by Purdue University

Scholarship Program Established To Expand Avenues For Internet Security Research

CUPERTINO, Calif. - April 09, 2003 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq:SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced the recipient of the Symantec Fellowship at Purdue University’s Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS). As part of Symantec’s University Research Program, the Fellowship is intended to generate new sources of research for the study of Internet security issues.

Abhilasha Bhargav was awarded the fellowship at the annual CERIAS Spring Symposium held April 8 on the West Lafayette, Ind. campus of Purdue University. The Symantec Fellowship will provide up to $50,000 to cover the full tuition costs for two years and a stipend for a degree-seeking student enrolled at Purdue and working with CERIAS. The Fellowship will begin during the 2003-2004 school year and will be expanded to include a second student beginning the fall of 2004.

"The Symantec Fellowship culminates the shared view by CERIAS and Symantec of the need for a long-term solution to generate the intellectual capital required to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of computer network security," said Dr. Eugene Spafford, professor and director of CERIAS at Purdue University. "We look forward to working with Symantec to expand their fellowship program at CERIAS to include additional students in the coming years and encourage other companies to follow suit with initiatives of their own."

"We view the Symantec Fellowship at Purdue University as a model for the type of public/private partnerships that are needed to provide the resources needed in terms of manpower and information to meet today's cyber threats worldwide," said Wesley Higaki, director of Symantec's University Research Program. "The United States suffers from a tremendous lack of trained Internet security personnel, with a shortage estimated to be in the neighborhood of 225,000 vacant positions. The Symantec Fellowship is a means to address that issue as well."

Miss Bhargav was one of approximately 35 students who were accepted into the graduate program in Purdue's School of Computer Science, out of more than 500 students who applied. She received a bachelor's degree in computer science in December 2002 from Purdue University, and will conduct her graduate research at CERIAS, one of the world's foremost university centers for multidisciplinary research and education in areas of information security.

The relationship between Purdue University and Symantec stems from Symantec's University Research Program, established to facilitate and coordinate Symantec's involvement with universities that emphasize research and study in the Internet security field. Approximately 30 universities in the United States meet the criteria established by the National Colloquium for Information System Security Education (NCISSE) and the National Security Agency to be awarded the "Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education" designation.

Through the University Research Program, Symantec supports the efforts of these universities regarding the study of Internet security and encourages other universities to expand their research programs. Aside from monetary support through Fellowships, Symantec supports universities by offering corporate spokespersons for seminars and lectures to students and faculties. In addition, Symantec provides feedback on the research conducted by universities and input on areas that the industry deems important to help direct the focus of study by universities on Internet security issues.
