CUPERTINO, Calif. - Dec. 15, 2003 -
Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that it is working with Magee Rehabilitation Hospital to secure the hospital's network infrastructure through a combination of intrusion protection, firewall and antivirus technologies. Additionally, the Philadelphia hospital is utilizing Symantec Enterprise Security Manager (ESM) to continually monitor its networks' compliance with information security requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
Deployed in support of Magee Rehabilitation's information security strategy, Symantec's solutions offer comprehensive protection from a wide range of cyber threats. Symantec ManHunt network intrusion protection system continuously scans the hospital's network for suspect and malicious activity, while Symantec VelociRaptor firewall appliances provide full-inspection firewall packet screening at multiple gateway access points. Complementing the hospital's existing use of Symantec AntiVirus Enterprise Edition at all network tiers, Symantec AntiVirus for SMTP Gateways delivers integrated, multi-layered mail security against malicious code threats, spam, and other unwanted content at the Internet email gateway. Finally, hospital authorities are using Symantec ESM to continually monitor and document their mission-critical information systems' compliance with internal security policies, including those specific to HIPAA. Trellis Network Services of Cranbury, NJ, a Symantec Enterprise Solutions Partner providing enterprise-wide security and managed services, is assisting in the implementation of Symantec solutions through an ongoing consulting relationship with the hospital.
"As our industry leverages technology to drive efficiencies and improve the quality of care, our charge is to ensure today's sophisticated network threats do not compromise or co-opt the hospital's IT assets," said Steve Peterson, Director, Information Systems at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital. "Symantec's solutions let us adapt and manage a superior, integrated defense against a wide spectrum of network risks, from malicious code and intrusion attempts to problems that high-volume spam cause for hospital staff focused on critical tasks."
"Security is a key enabler for IT innovation in healthcare," said Glenn Taylor, Symantec's director of state, local, academic and hospital programs. "Magee Rehabilitation Hospital displays a holistic security defense that empowers health professionals to use technology with assurances that internal and regulatory security baselines are continuously maintained."
Symantec ESM enables organizations to define, measure, and report on the compliance of information systems with pre-determined security baselines. Symantec ManHunt provides multi-gigabit network intrusion detection, real-time analysis and correlation, and proactive prevention and response to protect enterprise networks against internal and external intrusions and denial-of-service attacks. Symantec VelociRaptor firewall/VPN appliances provide easy-to-manage enterprise-class network perimeter security and superior data throughput, with award-winning Symantec Enterprise Firewall/VPN technologies. Symantec AntiVirus Enterprise Edition delivers multi-tiered enterprise protection at the gateway, network server, and workstation. The suite provides Symantec's industry-leading antivirus technologies in a single, comprehensive solution. Symantec AntiVirus for SMTP Gateways scans for viruses and stops unwanted spam content using a combination of layered technologies, such as anti-spam heuristics and suppot for multiple blacklists and whitelists.
