Symantec Managed Security Service Announces Comprehensive Program for Global Customer Notification of Emerging Threats

Proactive Threat Notification and Guidance Positions Customers to Better Manage Security Risks

CUPERTINO, Calif. - Jan. 27, 2004 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced enhancements to their program for proactive global customer notification of emerging threats. The new program includes a detailed methodology for determining the existence of global emerging threats based on factors such as the method of propagation and impact, a coordinated internal response effort across Symantec's Managed Security Services and Security Response teams , and a variety of mechanisms-text-to-voice, email and Web portal-for communicating threat information to Symantec MSS customers.

"With the increasing rate of vulnerability discovery, corporate IT teams have an imperative to patch their systems, but don't have a view into the corresponding Internet-wide threat trends," said Grant Geyer, vice president of Symantec Managed Security Services. "This new program will leverage the breadth of technology and expertise across the Symantec Managed Security Services and Symantec Security Response teams to help clients make better decisions regarding their security. Based upon statistically significant indicators, Symantec's MSS team will notify customers of emerging threats posing risk to the Internet community, as well as provide actionable recommendations."

The following factors are taken into consideration prior to determining whether an alert should be issued:

  • Symantec Threat Category Rating
  • Method of Propagation
  • Statistically Significant Observed Activity in the Wild
  • Number of Clients Impacted
  • Type of Impact
  • Prevalence of Vulnerability

Symantec Managed Security Services has developed a variety of mechanisms for communicating threat information to customers:

  • Automated Text-to-Voice Notification: This communication method allows for quick notification of a customer's entire global customer base and its registered point-of-contacts (POCs) for emerging threats in less than 15 minutes.
  • Email Notification: Registered POCs can receive emails about the emerging threat with links to the Web portal that provide more detailed information.
  • Web Portal Posting: Symantec Managed Security Services posts Symantec Response team's analysis of the emerging threat as well as recommendations for action to a Web portal.

Symantec also leverages the capabilities of Security Response and the DeepSight Threat Management System to provide rapid response regarding vulnerabilities that may not yet be actualized threats. This process includes rapid evaluation of all MSS systems for vulnerabilities, evaluation of all supported IDS systems for signature coverage if available, and rapid testing and rollout of signatures as vendors release them.

In general, customers only receive proactive notification regarding worldwide incidents, such as W32.Bugbear.B@mm and W32.Blaster.worm. For routine virus alerts, vulnerability alerts, attack tools and scripts, customers can purchase complementary Symantec solutions such as Symantec DeepSight Threat Management and Alert Services or sign up to receive free security alerts from Symantec Security Response.
