Symantec's Norton Antispam Bests Field Of Eight To Earn PC Magazine Editors' Choice Award
Norton AntiSpam Joins Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiVirus, and Norton Personal Firewall in PC Magazine Winner's Circle
CUPERTINO, Calif. - Feb. 19, 2004 -
Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security technology, today announced that its Norton AntiSpam 2004 was named Editors' Choice for personal spam filtering tools by PC Magazine. Norton AntiSpam outperformed seven competitors to earn the coveted designation in the February 17, 2004 issue of the publication. With this win, all Symantec Norton brand security products currently hold PC Magazine's prestigious Editors' Choice awards. Norton AntiSpam surpassed all competitors in October 2003 to earn the CNET Editors' Choice Award as well.
"Spam is not only an inconvenience and an annoyance, it is also becoming a security threat. Spam is now being used to commit identity theft and is being used as a way to deliver malicious code and spyware. The growth of spam and the dangers it delivers is threatening to undermine the benefits of electronic communication," said Matthew Moynahan, vice president of Product Management, Client and Host Security, at Symantec. "Norton AntiSpam provides an answer. Symantec is honored that PC Magazine recognizes Norton AntiSpam as the very best tool for efficiently and effectively controlling unwanted email."
According to IDC, spam represented 32 percent of all external and internal email sent on an average day in North America in 2003-up from 24 percent in 2002. The study adds that with more than 500 million business email users worldwide last year and more than 20 billion spam messages expected to be sent daily worldwide by 2006, the impact on business communications is significant. Norton AntiSpam is Symantec's powerful yet intuitive solution for addressing this challenge by automatically and accurately detecting and filtering out such unwanted email at the desktop.
"Three cheers for the new kid on the block, Symantec's Norton AntiSpam 2004," editors wrote. "Symantec's first standalone venture into the antispam market caught a greater percentage of junk mail than any other standalone utility we tested." According to PC Magazine editors, Norton AntiSpam blocked 93 percent of the spam streaming into their in-box.
Editors also singled out Norton AntiSpam for its usability. "Much like the other Norton security products, [Norton AntiSpam] is wonderfully easy to set up and use," they commented. Building whitelists and blacklists, creating custom filters, and configuring Norton AntiSpam to block messages containing certain words or phrases was simple, according to editors. They also highlighted the value of the software's intelligent filtering engine. "Using a pair of buttons added to your email client, you can train its Bayesian engine to recognize what you consider spam," they wrote.
Norton AntiSpam is also a valuable component of Norton Internet Security, Symantec's easy-to-use and comprehensive security and privacy suite for home and small office PC users. Norton Internet Security, a three-time recipient of PC Magazine's Best Products of the Year and Editors' Choice awards, features Symantec's best-of-breed antivirus, firewall, intrusion detection, privacy protection, content filtering, and spam filtering solutions in a single tightly integrated suite. Norton AntiVirus, a PC Magazine Editors' Choice winner since 1996 and a recipient of PC Magazine's Best of 2003 award, is included in Norton Internet Security. The suite also includes two-time PC Magazine Editors' Choice winner Norton Personal Firewall.
