Symantec First to Offer Single-Vendor Solution for Email Security
CUPERTINO, Calif. - Oct. 31, 2005 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced Symantec Mail Security Enterprise Edition, a unique, comprehensive mail security solution for SMTP gateway and groupware tiers, scheduled to be released in November. Symantec Mail Security Enterprise Edition is an important part of Symantec's Email Security and Availability solution strategy, which ensures the integrity of email systems and information. The new bundle will make it easier to implement market-leading email security technologies to significantly reduce the volume of spam and threats to the network posed by email-based threats, and to control the flow of unauthorized or inappropriate content in email both internally and externally.
Symantec Mail Security Enterprise Edition will provide integrated virus scanning, antispam, content filtering controls, and the flexibility to choose between multi-platform software-based, appliance-based and hosted service solutions. The bundle also includes several deployment options to protect the SMTP gateway - the primary entry point for Internet-borne threats - through the Symantec Mail Security 8200 Series appliance and Symantec Hosted Mail Security, and through software offerings such as Symantec Mail Security for SMTP (with Premium AntiSpam option enabled) and Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam (includes both antivirus and antispam). In addition, to protect email on internal mail servers from threats and inappropriate email content, Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange and Symantec Mail Security for Domino ensure tight integration for real-time, on-demand and scheduled scans of the message store.
All products in the Symantec Mail Security Enterprise Edition bundle will offer robust content filtering capabilities to inspect incoming, outgoing and internal email communications and to take action based on message content, such as subject line, message body and attachments. The solutions will also contain Symantec's award-winning extensible antivirus technology to defend against unknown and known viruses, as well as antispam technologies that provide greater than 95 percent detection and the industry's highest accuracy rate against false positives (99.9999 percent), allowing users to safely delete spam without review or to quarantine spam in a secure, web-based spam quarantine. Symantec Mail Security Enterprise Edition is backed by Symantec Security Response, the world's leading Internet security research and support organization, which ensures antispam definitions are regularly updated and that virus definitions can be updated on a scheduled hourly, daily or weekly basis, as well as in real-time as new threats emerge.
"Email is a critical component of the corporate infrastructure and a target for malicious code and attackers, so organizations require more comprehensive and reliable protection," said Chris Miller, director of product management for Symantec Messaging and Web Security. "In addition, today's enterprises prefer the convenience of a mail security solution from a single vendor rather than several solutions from various vendors, and Symantec will deliver with Symantec Mail Security Enterprise Edition."
Momentum Marketing conducted a survey, on behalf of Symantec, of more than 800 email security IT decision-makers from June through August 2005. The survey found that 56 percent of companies in the United States and 49 percent of companies in the United Kingdom favor bundled mail security solutions, compared with just 24 percent of U.S companies and 23 percent of U.K. companies that opt for best-of-breed products.
The survey also showed that for companies in the U.S., U.K., and Japan, the most important features for mail security suites were high accuracy in virus detection, frequent definition updates, spam detection, and overall value. Gateway antivirus and groupware antivirus were considered the most important functionality of an email security suite, followed by antispam and content filtering and compliance.
In addition, a recent report by Ferris Research (www.ferris.com) bears out the survey findings. The Ferris Research report, called "The Email Security Market 2005-2010," found that customers are increasingly seeking a single-vendor solution for their email security needs. This, the report added, contrasts starkly with the best-of-breed approach prevalent 12 to 24 months ago.
