Tire Co. Selects ON iCommand for Rapid Automated Roll-Out
and Centralized Administration of Dell Retail POS Device
Largest Independent
Tire Retailer Chooses ON iCommand Suite to
Cost-Effectively Manage Rapid Growth in Nearly 600 Locations
Across 18 States
Solution “Pays
for Itself” in Less Than Two Months, While Enhancing
Customer Satisfaction, Corporate Security, and Operational
Efficiency
WALTHAM,
MA (Feb 4, 2004) – ON Technology (NASDAQ:
ONTC), a leading provider of enterprise infrastructure
management solutions, today announced that Discount
Tire Company, America’s largest independent tire
company, has recently selected and successfully begun
its implementation of ON iCommand to manage 3,300 Point-of-Sale
(POS) devices and PCs across its entire retail and corporate
infrastructure.
Based in Scottsdale, Ariz., Discount
Tire has 528 retail stores in 18 states with plans to
aggressively expand its retail locations over the next
year. Discount Tire is currently using ON iCommand to
automate and accelerate the roll-out of new Dell OptiPlex
POS systems in all of its stores, as well as provide
ongoing security patch management and one-click disaster
recovery. ON iCommand will also be used to provide centralized
management for all desktops and laptops in the company’s
five regional distribution centers, 19 warehouses, 19
regional offices, as well as in its customer call center
and corporate headquarters.
The retailer is now rolling-out
an unprecedented 500 new POS devices per week using
iCommand’s unique auto-provisioning capability.
With this automated feature, Discount Tire can now upgrade
its entire POS infrastructure in less than two months
without tying up valuable corporate IT resources. This
is a remarkable improvement compared to the estimated
12 months and five full-time corporate IT people it
would take to complete this type of project using traditional
manual “sneakernet.”
In addition, ON’s auto-provisioning
capability also allows Discount Tire to cost-effectively
manage rapid growth as the company adds new store locations
because it allows non-technical, store employees to
easily and rapidly provision new POS systems. Discount
Tire joins a fast-growing number of leading retailers
– including The Home Depot, Staples, PETCO and
OfficeMax – who have implemented ON’s advanced
solution to dramatically lower the cost of managing
their mission-critical retail infrastructures while
simultaneously improving customer service and corporate
security.
ON iCommand minimizes downtime
for Discount Tire’s POS systems by ensuring they
always have the latest application updates and security
patches – delivered “over-the-wire,”
even over low-bandwidth frame-relay communication links
– while ON’s one-click disaster recovery
capability allows administrators to rapidly restore
corrupted or misconfigured systems without incurring
the considerable time delay and expense of sending technicians
to remote store locations.
“By fully automating our
roll-out of new Dell POS systems, ON’s solution
paid for itself in less than two months,” said
Beverly West, manager of PC technology for Discount
Tire Co. “ON’s unique combination of rapid
implementation time with proven technology for the retail
sector yielded an ROI that surpassed our expectations.
In addition, ON was the only company that could deliver
the flexibility and reliability of parameter-based native
installations, allowing us to provide the best possible
service to our customers.”
Full
Lifecycle Management
Discount Tire is leveraging ON iCommand to manage the
full end-to-end lifecycle of its store devices. Discount
Tire’s IT organization has also integrated ON
iCommand with its existing IBM AS/400 store servers,
which are being used as local caching servers for all
software applications and packages, in order to minimize
bandwidth usage. The ON solution is being used to install
and configure:
- The POS terminals’ operating
system, including critical network and security settings
- Discount Tire’s Java-based
customer service application
- Anti-virus software
- Emulation software for accessing
data on local IBM AS/400 store servers
- Other productivity applications
“We’re thrilled
to be helping innovative retailers like Discount Tire
with major technology initiatives that further enhance
their efficiency and competitiveness,” said Phil
Neray, vice president of marketing, ON Technology. “We
look forward to enabling their continued growth and
success over time.”
