ON Technology Extends Automated
Deployment
of Mission-Critical Applications to Palm Devices
Enters new smart handheld market
expected to grow
to over 500 million devices by 2002
Waltham,
MA, March 7, 2000 -- ON Technology Corporation
(NASDAQ: ONTC), a leading provider of advanced solutions
for managing software across corporate networks and
the Internet, today announced ON PDA Manager™
for the Palm Platform, a solution that extends the benefits
of enterprise management to information appliances manufactured
by Palm, Inc. (NASDAQ: PALM) and its licensees. ON PDA
Manager automatically deploys Palm applications to multiple
PCs and companion Palm devices from centralized servers,
without requiring end-user involvement. Palm Inc. currently
dominates the companion market with a 68.4% share of
the U.S. at the end of the first half of 1999, according
to IDC, and over 5.5 million devices installed worldwide.
"Mission-critical applications
are beginning to be deployed to handheld devices (particularly
Palm devices) in many organizations, and this trend
will accelerate over the next 2-3 years. Yet few organizations
have concrete strategies to make the deployment painless
or transparent," says Jack Gold, Senior Program
Director of META Group. "The success of wide-scale
deployments of mission-critical applications will be
contingent upon enabling an automated deployment process
for both LAN-connected and mobile users, and providing
continuous software management, set-up and update capability."
"In the era of pervasive computing,
corporations must ensure that business-critical information
is successfully proliferated to handheld devices wherever
they're located," said Robert Doretti, President
and CEO, ON Technology. "Our technology is designed
so that it can be extended to manage any type of information
device over any type of network. Today we're announcing
that we manage software for PDAs -- which will accelerate
adoption of devices such as the Palm platform in the
enterprise market -- in addition to our current support
for desktop and mobile PCs. This is the first of many
announcements for managing a range of information devices
- a market which should exponentially grow over the
years to come."
Out-of-the-Box
Deployment for Standard Applications such as Intellisync
and Lotus Notes
ON PDA Manager includes a suite of packages for installing
and configuring standard Palm applications and synchronization
software from a Windows-based administrative console.
It allows administrators to easily and dynamically configure
installation parameters with the click of a mouse -
such as company names, server names, and network protocols
-- as well as synchronization parameters for common
functions such as Address Books, Date Books, Mail, Memo
Pads, To Do Lists, etc. In particular, ON PDA Manager
provides support for Intellisync, an industry-leading
synchronization program from Puma Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:
PUMA). It also includes packages that install the Palm
Desktop and configure Intellisync for syncing with business-critical
applications such as: Lotus Notes for information management;
Symantec ACT! for sales force automation; Microsoft
Outlook for e-mail and personal information management;
and Meeting Maker for enterprise calendaring & scheduling.
ON PDA Manager also deploys custom-developed
PalmOS applications and content -- such as price lists
and retail inventory data -- to individual users or
groups of users.
Additional
Packages Available On-Line
ON Technology offers its customers a Web site from which
additional packages can be downloaded at no charge.
Additional packages can also be easily created with
ON Technology's automated tools and open published interfaces.
Higher
Reliability Using Standard Vendor Setup Programs
The packages delivered with ON PDA Manager rely on standard
vendor-supplied setup programs to install the software,
which eliminates the need to manually create application
"snapshots" or edit complex scripts as with
legacy software distribution approaches. This unique
native installation technology also delivers higher
reliability by leveraging the built-in environmental
checking provided by standard vendor setup programs
(e.g., whether a DLL exists or should be replaced during
installation).
