ZapMe! Teams with ON Technology
to Deliver the Latest PC Software to Teachers and
Students
ZapMe! to provide computing services
and content to nation's schools
over broadband satellite links using ON Command CCM
Waltham,
MA, April 13, 2000 - ZapMe! Corporation (Nasdaq:
IZAP) and ON Technology Corporation (Nasdaq: ONTC) today
announced a partnership to use ON Command CCM™
to deploy software and provide PC infrastructure management
across satellite IP networks to the nation's schools.
ZapMe! is using ON Command CCM to accelerate and improve
its nationwide roll-out of PCs as well as deploy software
updates and provide a high quality of service to all
schools served by its Internet media network - even
those in remote rural locations. ZapMe! is deploying
a broadband interactive network that brings the latest
technology tools and educational content to schools
at no cost, in partnership with leading companies such
as Ask Jeeves, Dell Computer, Microsoft, and Yahoo!
- and now ON Technology. ZapMe! plans to manage over
20,000 PCs with its initial deployment of ON Command
CCM.
"Managing the world's largest
Internet media network devoted to education requires
the most sophisticated technology support available
today," said Rick Inatome, ZapMe! President and
CEO. "ON Command CCM gives us the edge we need
to remotely manage and configure our nationwide network
of computers in over 1,800 schools as well as operate
a sophisticated satellite Internet media network to
ensure the fast and responsible delivery of educational
content to students, educators and parents across the
country."
ZapMe! provides teachers and students
with network-based access to more than 13,000 pre-selected
and indexed educational sites, applications, and services
at no cost -- as well as PCs, servers and "always-on"
satellite-delivered connectivity to their leading edge
netspace. ON Command CCM will be used to centrally deploy
and configure all desktop and server software, including
the ZapMe!™ netspace - an Internet media network
specializing in education, which provides a powerful
learning experience to middle and high school students,
educators and parents across the country.
"We're proud to be helping
ZapMe! deliver the latest technology and educational
resources to students across the country," said
Robert Doretti, President and CEO, ON Technology. "This
partnership validates the value of our technology in
delivering substantial cost and service benefits across
broadband networks for service providers and IT organizations
worldwide."
ON Command CCM leverages the latest
Wired for Management standards for unattended functions
such as Wake-on-LAN and network booting, and automatically
installs operating systems and applications as well
as incremental software updates such as Service Packs
or new applications that may be required in the future.
Unlike conventional software distribution or disk imaging
tools, ON Command CCM allows ZapMe! to instantly build
or rebuild PCs from remote locations without sending
technicians on-site, via a simple point-and-click graphical
interface and a centralized client database that tracks
all software installations and updates on a per-PC basis.
