ON Technology Ships Breakthrough
Wizard for Deploying Next-Generation Windows 2000/XP
Applications
ON Command® MSI Package
Wizard TM V2.0 Uses Point-and-Click Interface
to Dramatically Reduce Time Required to Configure
Windows Installer-Compatible Applications for Unattended
Enterprise-Wide Deployment
Waltham,
MA (May 14, 2002)- ON Technology (Nasdaq:ONTC),
a leading provider of enterprise infrastructure management
solutions, today announced the release of ON Command®
MSI Package Wizard™ V2.0, a breakthrough solution
that allows IT administrators to rapidly and easily
configure next-generation Windows® 2000/XP applications
for unattended deployment from centralized ON Command
CCM servers.
The ON Command MSI Package Wizard
is a breakthrough solution that allows IT administrators
to create unattended deployment packages in minutes
using point-and-click menus, rather than days or weeks
as with traditional approaches. These approaches are
typically more complex and time-consuming because they
require users to de-compose applications into hundreds
or thousands of individual components such as files
and registry settings. The new approach provided by
ON is expected to result in dramatic time and cost savings
for enterprise-wide implementations of Windows 2000
and Windows XP.
Currently shipping, ON's MSI Package
Wizard is targeted at applications that are compatible
with Microsoft's latest installation technology, Microsoft
Windows Installer (MSI). Windows Installer is an important
new Microsoft standard for Windows 2000/XP applications
that significantly improves PC reliability by providing
a consistent Windows-resident service for installing
applications, managing DLL conflicts, and performing
automated self-healing. Windows Installer is used for
both in-house corporate applications as well as hundreds
of off-the-shelf applications such as Microsoft Office
XP and Internet Explorer.
"We were impressed by the
power, flexibility and ease-of-use provided by ON's
MSI Package Wizard," said Michael Kronk, Integration
Consultant, MS Integration (www.ms-integration.com).
MS Integration is a leading IT solutions provider which
is currently using ON Command CCM to remotely manage
mission-critical PCs and servers for clients in multiple
locations worldwide. "We've used many packaging
and distribution tools over the years, but ON's MSI
Package Wizard is unlike anything we've ever seen. We
expect it to play a significant role in simplifying
our client's enterprise-wide migration to Windows 2000,
Windows XP and Office XP."
Phil Neray, Vice-President of Marketing
for ON Technology, added: "Unlike conventional
software distribution tools which rely on closed, complex,
and proprietary re-packaging technologies, ON's solution
leverages industry-standard Windows Installer functionality
to deliver fast implementation times as well as higher
reliability. As a result, ON Command CCM and the MSI
Package Wizard provide a much simpler and more robust
management solution for next-generation Windows 2000
and XP environments."
Features
& Benefits
ON Command MSI Package Wizard V2.0 delivers a range
of industry-leading features that make it significantly
easier for IT administrators to roll-out Windows 2000
and XP applications, including:
- Wizard-Driven Interface:
A series of point-and-click wizards guide administrators
through each step, for maximum speed and ease-of-use
in creating Windows 2000 and XP deployment packages.
- Embraces and Extends
Microsoft Technology: ON's solution deploys
standard Windows Installer files which are then installed
by the standard Microsoft Windows Installer service
- thus providing all of the built-in benefits of Windows
Installer within a centrally-managed ON Command CCM
environment. Moreover, ON extends Windows Installer
technology by providing a single, centralized ODBC/JDBC-compliant
database for all Windows Installer error messages
and deployment status information, as well as a Microsoft
Management Console-compatible (MMC) graphical user
interface for administering the system.
- Easy and Dynamic Customization:
ON's MSI Package Wizard allows administrators to easily
customize applications from simple drop-down menus
in the ON administrative console. For example, administrators
can easily deploy full installations of Office XP
to groups of power users as well as streamline installations
for ordinary users - without any understanding whatsoever
of Windows Installer technology. (The ON solution
is unique because it dynamically creates a special
kind of Windows Installer package at runtime, called
a "transform file", which modifies the way
in which installations occur based on menu selections
made by the administrator.)
