OfficeMax
Implements ON Technology Solution to Manage 10,000-Seat Corporate and Retail Infrastructure
Industry-Leading Software & Asset Management
Solution to Enhance Operational Efficiency and Enable Real-Time
Response to Business Changes
Waltham,
Mass. (May 27, 2003) - ON Technology Corporation
(NASDAQ: ONTC), a leading provider of enterprise infrastructure
management solutions, today announced that OfficeMax,
Inc. (NYSE: OMX) has successfully begun its implementation
of ON Technology’s software solution to manage
its entire retail and corporate PC infrastructure. The
implementation includes managing 10,000-plus systems
such as retail Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals, Internet
kiosks, CopyMax® workstations, and store manager
workstations in nearly 1,000 superstores, as well as
PCs throughout the OfficeMax corporate environment.
The ON Technology
software management offering helps OfficeMax respond
quickly to market and technology changes by deploying
real-time critical updates – such as price changes
and security patches – from a single centralized
location to any device across its network. OfficeMax
is also using ON Command Discovery, ON’s asset
management solution powered by Centennial Discovery
from Centennial U.K. Ltd., to automatically discover
and track IT assets. In addition, ON’s remote
control solution, ON Command Remote, is being used by
OfficeMax to enable rapid resolution of end-user problems
from the corporate Help Desk.
The ON Technology solution will
also be used to rapidly deploy software to desktops
and mobile laptops across the company’s corporate
infrastructure, including software such as line-of-business
applications, productivity applications and corporate
data, as well as operating systems and security patches.
“We are extremely pleased
to be working with OfficeMax on this major strategic
deployment,” said Robert Doretti, Chairman, President
and CEO of ON Technology. “Our unique ability
to meet the needs of large retail organizations is validated
by the many retailers worldwide that have chosen our
innovative technology for unattended management of hundreds
of thousands of retail devices, PCs and servers. We
worked closely with OfficeMax’s IT organization
to understand its needs and demonstrate our unique capabilities,
and look forward to a long relationship providing outstanding
support and service.”
World-Class
Retailers Leverage ON Technology Solutions
In addition to OfficeMax, ON Technology’s retail
customer base includes world-class retailers such as
The Home Depot in the U.S. as well as COOP and Charles
Vogele in Europe. The company also has a strategic partnership
with Fujitsu Transaction Solutions, a leading provider
of point-of-sale (POS) hardware, software and infrastructure
management services, to jointly target the retail market.
OfficeMax is a joint customer of both ON Technology
and Fujitsu.
Deploying
Critical Updates While Minimizing Bandwidth Usage
ON software solution will be used to deploy critical
operating systems, applications, and store data across
OfficeMax’s Wide Area Network (WAN), while dynamically
adjusting network usage to preserve scarce bandwidth
for crucial store traffic such as credit card authorizations
and customer-facing applications.
- In particular, the ON solution will be used to:
Rapidly provision both new and legacy POS systems
with the Microsoft Windows® XP Embedded operating
system and the Fujitsu GlobalSTORE® application.
- Integrate with OfficeMax’s SAP AG system
to instantly deploy pricing and marketing updates
in real-time to all stores.
- Instantly deploy critical software updates such
as security patches, new versions of credit card verification
software, and updated drivers for POS hardware such
as touch screens and card scanners.
- Discover and track hardware assets, monitor software
license compliance, track software usage, and immediately
identify whenever a device has been moved or re-configured.
