Safety Insurance Selects ON
Technology for Enterprise Software Management
ON partners with network VAR –
URS Information Systems –
to install and support ON Command SiteManager for
Windows 2000 migration and ongoing desktop management
Waltham,
MA, July 30, 2001 – ON Technology (NasdaqNM:
ONTC), a leading provider of remote software and content
management solutions, today announced that Safety Insurance
has selected ON Command® SiteManager™ to provide
a single, centralized management solution for all desktop
PCs in its corporate network environment. The company
will initially use ON Command SiteManager to assist
in its migration to Windows 2000 Professional. Safety
Insurance, headquartered in Boston, is one of the top
three providers of private passenger automobile insurance
in Massachusetts with nearly 500 employees.
“ON Command SiteManager is
a full lifecycle solution that’s easy to use and
very cost-effective,” said Edward Drexel, MIS
Manager, Safety Insurance. “We considered Microsoft
SMS but it’s expensive, complex, and requires
a large investment in training and support. With SiteManager,
we can deploy operating systems like Windows 2000 from
centralized servers and then keep all our desktops and
mission-critical applications up-to-date on an ongoing
basis – without sending technicians to every PC.
SiteManager is a great product because it lowers our
IT costs and makes us much more efficient.”
ON Technology Chairman, President
and CEO Robert Doretti commented, “We're delighted
to have Safety Insurance as a new customer and look
forward to their continuing success with ON Command
SiteManager.” He added, `”This account win
for SiteManager is further validation that IT organizations
are looking for affordable and easy-to-use management
solutions that allow them to manage the entire PC lifecycle.''
Industry analysts estimate it costs
IT organizations approximately $150 per PC to manually
update applications using traditional desktop visits
by technicians, and approximately 50 percent more ($225)
to perform updates for remote or mobile users. Prior
to implementing ON Command SiteManager, Safety Insurance
manually updated software on its end-user PCs. For example,
technicians were sent to every end-user PC whenever
a critical Windows service pack or insurance application
update was required. Now, with SiteManager’s intelligent
desktop agent installed on all PCs, the IT department
can deploy and update applications from an intuitive,
Windows-based Graphical User Interface (GUI) console,
while tracking all deployments and updates in SiteManager’s
integrated client database, thus saving significant
time and money.
“ON Command SiteManager allows
our customers such as Safety Insurance to easily automate
their migrations to Windows 2000 and have total desktop
control afterwards,” said Bill Smeltzer, COO and
Vice-President of Sales for URS Information Systems,
a network VAR and ON Command SiteManager reseller. “SiteManager
is great for us because it delivers a rapid return on
investment which can easily be demonstrated to CIOs
and CFOs.”
Safety Insurance’s network
environment consists of Windows NT and 2000 servers
with Windows 95, 98, and Windows 2000 PCs connected
over Ethernet in a VLAN topology. SiteManager will be
used to manage Safety Insurance’s desktop operating
systems as well as a range of applications including
standard productivity apps such as Office 2000, Microsoft
Outlook, and Internet Explorer along with IBM mainframe
access software, anti-virus apps, and in-house client/server
applications.
