of Cruise Ship PCs and Point-of-Sale Terminals via Wireless
Network
Innovative
ON Solution Enables World's Most Popular Cruise Line
to Create "Floating" IT Environment, Lowering IT Costs
while Enhancing Guest Satisfaction
Waltham,
MA (Aug. 12, 2003) – ON Technology (NASDAQ:
ONTC), a leading provider of enterprise infrastructure
management solutions, today announced that Miami-based
Carnival Cruise Lines, the world’s largest and
most popular cruise line, has successfully begun its
implementation of ON Technology’s advanced software
solution. The implementation includes remotely managing
more than 4,000 business-critical computers and devices
on Carnival’s 19-ship fleet, as well as all PCs
within its reservation centers and corporate headquarters.
“The ON Technology solution
enables us to create a robust and reliable management
infrastructure for all our computing systems, whether
they’re located in one of our reservation centers
or in a ‘floating’ IT environment thousands
of miles away on a cruise ship,” said Douglas
Eney, Staff Vice President of Systems Support and Technology
for Carnival Cruise Lines. “By automating our
existing IT processes, the ON solution significantly
reduces IT costs while simultaneously enhancing guest
satisfaction by allowing us to continuously update and
fix remote systems in real-time, without deploying IT
personnel.”
The ON solution enables Carnival
to lower IT costs by automating the provisioning and
ongoing management of all devices such as Point-of-Sale
(POS) terminals and PCs in its “24/7” reservation
centers. At the same time, it maximizes guest satisfaction
and ensures minimal downtime via real-time software
and security updates as well as one-click disaster recovery
for critical systems.
“We are pleased to welcome
Carnival, one of the most recognizable names in travel,
to the ON Technology family of enterprise customers,”
said Robert L. Doretti, Chairman, President and CEO
of ON Technology. “This implementation demonstrates
once again that our solutions uniquely satisfy the demanding
requirements of distributed enterprises which require
management over a broad range of wired and wireless
networks.”
Unlike traditional management solutions
which can only be used to manage systems that are connected
over high-speed LANs, ON’s innovative solution
allows highly-distributed enterprises like Carnival
to manage both LAN-connected systems and remote/mobile
systems from a single integrated console – even
over intermittent low-bandwidth connections such as
wireless networks. ON’s solution is also unique
in managing any function on any remote device, including
operating system deployment and disaster recovery, which
differs from conventional solutions which can only be
used to deploy applications and updates. Carnival is
also utilizing these advanced capabilities to perform
an unattended, enterprise-wide deployment of Microsoft
Windows 2000® for all its PCs and servers.
