Major London College Cuts Windows
2000 Roll-Out Time
by 50% with ON Technology
ON Command CCM Used to Implement
Windows 2000 Roll-Out Across Seven Sites in Just 8
Weeks, While Providing Ongoing Centralized Management
and Saving Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars
Waltham,
MA, September 26, 2001 – ON Technology
(NasdaqNM: ONTC), a leading provider of remote software
and content management solutions, today announced that
London’s Westminster Kingsway College implemented
ON Command® CCM™ to manage its migration to
Windows 2000 across two thousand desktops located over
seven distributed sites in central London. As featured
in the September 20, 2001 issue of Computing, ON Command
CCM halved the expected deployment time.
Unlike traditional desktop management
tools such as Microsoft SMS, ON Command CCM manages
the entire lifecycle of PCs, including installing operating
systems like Windows 2000 and performing automated disaster
recovery from blank or re-formatted hard drives when
required. The college is now using ON Command CCM as
part of its ongoing IT support infrastructure to manage
operating systems, applications, and network configurations
centrally, without sending technicians to remote sites.
“The motivation for us was
to save time and money,” said Ian MacDonald, Head
of IT Services at Westminster Kingsway College. “We
are down to seven people to run our seven-site network,
and we couldn’t do it without the technology to
replace the people. We don’t have to be dashing
around the sites all the time, we can do it all from
a central location now. We have been able to write off
about £200,000 [approximately US $300,000] of
staff costs.”
Westminster Kingsway used ON Command
CCM to ensure its Windows 2000 implementation would
be completed during the standard eight-week summer holiday.
The college decided to standardize on Windows 2000 after
a merger last year created central London’s largest
further education college, with over 25,000 students
on a mixed environment of Windows NT and Windows 95
desktops. As part of the migration to Windows 2000,
ON Command CCM was also used to roll-out core desktop
applications such as Microsoft’s Internet Explorer
and Excel, as well as virus protection software. The
college is using server hardware from Dell Computer
to run its centralized ON Command CCM management software.
MacDonald continued, “With
ON Command CCM we now have a tool that supports more
flexible management of desktops. Applications can be
added and removed without the need to completely re-image
the machine, and ON Technology’s native installation
technology provides a higher rate of success than with
traditional imaging tools we have used in the past,
such as Symantec Ghost.”
Harald Faulhaber, ON Technology’s
newly appointed Vice President of European Operations,
said, “Today’s college environments are
fast-moving and require robust, reliable IT support.
ON Command CCM allows Westminster Kingsway College to
manage its desktops from a single remote, central site
while providing the software consistency required for
efficient IT support operations. Also, this customer’s
success clearly shows that deploying new software does
not have to be a long and costly process.”
