Screen Actors Guild - Producers Pension and Health Plans Selects ON iCommand for Centralized Management
of PC & Server Infrastructure
Turner Techtronics Leverages ON Solution to Deliver Outsourced IT Services to Burbank-Based Benefits Provider, Reducing Support Costs and Increasing Availability of
Mission-Critical Claims Systems
Waltham,
MA (Oct. 9, 2003) – – ON Technology
(NASDAQ: ONTC), a leading provider of enterprise infrastructure
management solutions, today announced that the Screen
Actors Guild – Producers Pension and Health Plans
(SAG-PPHP) has selected ON iCommand™ to centrally
manage its PC and server infrastructure, including users
at its headquarters and remote locations as well as
mobile users. SAG-PPHP, with locations in Burbank, CA,
Ventura, CA, New York, and Miami, serves more than 60,000
actors and their dependents and manages a common fund
to provide pension and health benefits for all eligible
SAG members.
Turner Techtronics, Inc., a leading
regional service provider focused on serving the needs
of the entertainment industry, has been awarded the
desktop outsourcing contract from SAG-PPHP and will
be using the ON solution for SAG-PPHP. The ON solution
is expected to reduce support costs and increase the
availability of mission-critical claims systems for
SAG-PPHP.
“We chose ON iCommand because
it uniquely satisfies both our tactical and strategic
requirements,” said Nader Karimi, Executive Vice
President and CIO for SAG-PPHP. “We looked at
Microsoft SMS, Novell ZENworks®, and Computer Associates,
but only ON offers the comprehensive solution we needed
in an enterprise-class system that can be implemented
rapidly and deliver immediate operational benefits.”
According to Kevin Donnellan, SAG-PPHP
Director of Enterprise Infrastructure Services, “SAG-PPHP
operates an extensive Cisco network consisting of multiple
wired LANs, wireless LANs, and WANs with servers from
HP/Compaq and laptops and desktops from Dell. The ON
solution will be used to support users on all of these
platforms at our headquarters and remote locations,
as well as our mobile users.”
Firooz Ghassemi, SAG-PPHP Disaster
Recovery Officer, said “On the tactical side,
the ON solution will give us immediate visibility into
the state of all of our installed hardware and software,
while enabling us to immediately start deploying security
patches and automate our Windows® Server 2003 migration.
On the strategic side, it minimizes downtime by providing
one-click disaster recovery for all our mission-critical
systems – thus allowing us to specify meaningful
Service Level Agreements (SLAs) – while significantly
lowering ongoing support costs by eliminating the need
to dispatch service technicians to upgrade software
and fix desktop software issues.”
According to Dr. Ghassemi, “The
SAG-PPHP software evaluation committee selected ON iCommand
because it provides specific capabilities not found
in other management solutions,” including:
- One-Click Disaster Recovery:
The ON management server maintains a detailed history
of all installation and configuration actions performed
on each managed computer, using a standard SQL database.
This allows the system to rapidly rebuild corrupted
or misconfigured servers and PCs to their most recent
configuration, including deployment of the initial
base image as well as all subsequent updates, such
as security patches and application updates.
- Bare Metal OS Installations:
ON iCommand provides a unique full lifecycle approach
that starts with the very first OS installation onto
a bare metal machine, allowing SAG-PPHP to fully automate
their OS migrations as well as the rebuilding of corrupted
systems. ON’s bare metal approach is recognized
as the most reliable technique for building or rebuilding
computers, because it ensures that all installations
are performed on a “clean” machine. In
comparison, traditional software distribution tools
rely on having a working operating system already
in place before they can manage target computers,
resulting in additional time and cost required for
technicians to manually initiate hard drive “cleaning”
(disk formatting) and OS installation actions. In
addition, ON iCommand also supports Wake-on-LAN technology,
which allows software installations to be performed
during off-hours to minimize any impact on network
bandwidth or employee productivity.
- Native Installation Technology:
Complex SAG-PPHP applications cannot be reliably installed
using traditional “application imaging”
approaches incorporated in other management tools.
In comparison, the ON Agent executes the native application
installation program dynamically – in real-time
– exactly as it was designed to be executed
by application developers, rather than attempting
to re-package or reverse-engineer the installation
as a static sequence of file copies and registry modifications.
This significantly increases the reliability of remote
installations for all of SAG-PPHP’s applications.
“We look forward to working
closely with both SAG-PPHP and Turner Techtronics to
deliver world-class reliability, standardization, and
consistent IT processes to SAG-PPHP personnel,”
said Phil Neray, Vice-President of Marketing, ON Technology.
“In turn, we know this will allow SAG-PPHP to
continue being responsive to the needs of the many actors
and their dependents who rely on the organization to
provide them with important health and pension benefits.”
