ON Technology Announces XP
Migration Suite
Automated Solution Substantially
Lowers Cost of Enterprise-Wide Migrations to Windows
XP & Office XP
Waltham,
MA, October 10, 2001 - ON Technology Corporation
(Nasdaq:ONTC), a leading provider of remote software
and content management solutions, announced today its
XP Migration Suite, an automated solution for substantially
lowering the cost of enterprise-wide migrations to Microsoft
Windows XP and Office XP. ON's new XP solution is being
demonstrated this week (October 9-11) at Gartner Symposium
ITxpo, in Orlando, FL, at Booth #122.
ON's new XP Migration Suite offers
a series of automated software routines for remotely
installing Windows XP and Office XP on multiple PCs
simultaneously from centralized ON Command CCM™
servers. Automated routines are also provided for migrating
user files (such as "My Documents") and personalized
settings (such as Internet Explorer bookmarks). This
centralized, automated approach saves substantial time
and money by eliminating the need for IT technicians
to visit every end-user desktop to install the software
manually, a process which could easily take several
hours per machine.
According to industry analysts,
the direct labor cost of manually migrating PCs to a
new operating system is in excess of $200 per desktop,
which means that a typical 5,000-user organization can
immediately save at least $1 million using the XP Migration
Suite. This instant return-on-investment is further
enhanced by the ongoing benefits provided by ON Command
CCM after XP migrations, including one-click disaster
recovery and a powerful infrastructure for instantaneously
distributing all critical software updates on an ongoing
basis -- such as security patches, anti-virus updates,
and new or updated applications.
"Companies are now focusing
on critical IT initiatives that give them the quickest
bang for the buck, such as automating XP migrations
rather than outsourcing them to costly consultants or
using scarce internal IT resources," said Phil
Neray, vice-president of marketing, ON Technology. "Unlike
conventional enterprise frameworks like Microsoft Systems
Management Server (SMS) and Novadigm Radia, ON Command
CCM offers the unique capability to remotely install
both operating systems and applications, thus providing
the only complete XP migration solution for enterprise
organizations."
Corporations and PC manufacturers
are migrating rapidly to Windows XP due to its increased
security and stability. In fact, according to market
research firm IDC, by the end of 2002, 63 percent of
all new Windows licenses sold will be XP-based, with
an expected 73 million users. In recent published reports,
Gartner Inc. has reminded its clients that Windows 98
and Windows NT 4 will cease direct distribution to original
equipment manufacturers on June 30, 2002, further hastening
migrations to XP. Gartner also recommends that enterprises
migrate directly to XP, skipping Windows 2000 if they
have not yet begun testing and planning for it.
Complete Solution Delivers Total
Unattended Control Over XP Migration
ON's new XP Migration Suite provides unattended control
over installation of the Windows XP operating system
and the full suite of Office XP applications on remote
desktops, as well as migration of user files and application
settings:
- Windows XP: ON's solution
allows administrators to fully personalize each XP
installation on a per-PC or group-wide basis, with
customized parameters such as System ID (SID) and
NT Domain settings; it also supports varying hardware
configurations (e.g., different video cards or hard
drive configurations). Personalization is accomplished
via intuitive point-and-click menus from a familiar
Microsoft Management Console (MMC) compatible interface.
The interface also allows administrators to leverage
group information from Active Directory or NT Domains.
- Unlike Microsoft SMS,
ON's XP Migration Suite implements Microsoft's recommended
"clean install" approach for installing
XP, in which hard drives are reformatted before
installation of the new operating system.
- Unlike Microsoft Remote
Installation Services (RIS), ON Command CCM does
not require implementation of an entirely new network
infrastructure based on Active Directory and Windows
2000 Servers. Also with RIS, personalization is
accomplished by manual and error-prone editing of
complex answer file scripts rather than from point-and-click
menus as with the ON solution.
- Office XP: Enterprises
are rapidly migrating to Office XP due to its new
productivity and collaboration features as well as
its enhanced reliability, data recovery, and security.
ON's new XP Migration Suite provides automated routines
for installing Office XP applications such as Word,
Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, as well as easily personalizing
configuration values such as security settings and
Outlook profiles from point-and-click menus in the
MMC console.
- User Files & Settings:
ON's XP Migration Suite automates the remote execution
of Microsoft's Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
in order to migrate files and settings from older
environments to the newer XP environment without requiring
any end-user interaction. For example, migrated application
settings include desktop appearance (wallpaper, colors,
sounds, etc.), Internet settings (home page URL, favorites/bookmarks,
security settings, etc.), mail settings (name of mail
server, signature files, contact information, etc.),
and Office settings (default fonts, locations for
saving files, etc.). Support is also provided for
migrating user data files by file type (e.g., .DOC)
or folder name (e.g., My Documents).
Availability
ON's XP Migration Suite is currently available in pre-release
form; XP implementation and customization services are
also available from ON's Professional Services Organization.
ON is a Microsoft Certified Solution Provider. Please
