News Release
ON Technology and Shavlik Technologies, LLC Join Forces to Create Industry's First
Enterprise-Class Solution for Comprehensive Patch Management & Remediation
ON iPatch to Deliver Continuous Protection
& Rapid Recovery for Highly-Distributed Enterprises and Mobile Users
Gartner
Symposium/ITxpo, Orlando, FL (October 21, 2003)
– – ON Technology (NASDAQ:ONTC), a leading
provider of enterprise infrastructure management solutions,
today announced that it has agreed to enter into an
OEM partnership with Shavlik Technologies, LLC, a leading
security patch management provider.
As part of the agreement, Shavlik
will supply its automated HFNetChk vulnerability assessment,
patch installation technology, and continuously-updated
security knowledge base and patch repository to ON for
integration with ON iCommand™, ON Technology’s
enterprise platform for centralized software deployment
and configuration management.
The combined offering, ON iPatch™,
will allow enterprises to automate the discovery and
installation of missing security patches on thousands
of computers simultaneously – including mobile
and remote computers, no matter where they’re
located or how they’re connected. Additionally,
ON iPatch will allow organizations to rapidly recover
from virus corruption without the significant cost and
time delay of sending IT staff to remote locations.
As a result, ON iPatch will allow organizations to cost-effectively
protect business-critical systems and minimize the substantial
risk of lost revenue and downtime caused by future attacks.
With over 4 million downloads,
Shavlik’s HFNetChk engine is the industry standard
for security patch scanning management technology. HFNetChk
is also the basis of Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer
(MBSA was developed for Microsoft by Shavlik Technologies,
LLC).
The unique combination of ON iCommand
with HFNetChk will create the industry’s first
enterprise-class solution for comprehensive patch management
and remediation. Unlike traditional patch management
offerings, ON iPatch has been specifically designed
for highly-distributed organizations with multiple locations,
mobile users, and heterogeneous networks. By incorporating
ON iCommand’s advanced bandwidth management technologies,
ON iPatch will allow patch discovery and deployment
to occur efficiently and securely over a range of wired
and wireless networks including LANs, WANs, dial-up,
and the Internet. In addition, while conventional patch
management solutions typically focus exclusively on
the deployment of missing patches, ON iPatch will automatically
perform disaster recovery and remove viruses on corrupted
systems, by leveraging powerful agents and industry-standard
virus removal programs.
Finally, ON iPatch is expected
to be one of the only patch management solutions to
offer the flexibility of both agent-based and agent-less
deployments. Agent-based solutions are significantly
more robust and allow patches to be consistently deployed
and correctly applied, especially in multi-network environments,
while agent-less solutions are more effective for protecting
corporate networks from unmanaged computers, including
systems owned and controlled by external entities such
as contractors and business partners.
“ON’s scalable management
infrastructure and powerful remediation technology,
united with Shavlik’s best-of-breed patch analysis
technology, is a natural combination for us and the
marketplace,” said Robert L. Doretti, Chairman,
President and CEO of ON Technology. “The increased
threat from viruses and worms has placed far too many
companies at risk and has already resulted in millions
of dollars in lost revenue and downtime. This partnership
will allow us to deliver the most comprehensive patch
management solution to the marketplace, and the right
solution to solve this critical need for our customers.”
“Integrating real-time, automated
patch management with a centralized software deployment
and configuration management solution helps enterprise
customers easily add patch management to the roster
of tools required to secure today’s networks,”
stated Mark Shavlik, President and CEO of Shavlik Technologies.
“Increased dependence on networked environments
has made the cost of downtime and the resulting struggle
for recovery too great a risk. ON iPatch will offer
customers a complete solution that protects networks
before vulnerabilities can be exploited while allowing
organizations to quickly recover from corruption. At
the same time, it will significantly reduce the time
and effort required by administrators compared to traditional
manual approaches.”
Compared to recent patch management
offerings from traditional software distribution (SD)
and configuration management (CM) vendors, ON iPatch
will provide integrated support for best-of-breed vulnerability
assessment and security knowledge base technology from
a recognized leader in the security arena, with a decade
of experience developing and constantly enhancing its
patch management solutions. Shavlik’s “deep
scanning” technology is key to reliably detecting
missing patches and avoiding the danger of false positives,
which can be caused by less-specialized inventory scanning
tools that indicate a patch has been installed when
in fact it may already have been removed or superceded
by a more recent version.
In addition, by leveraging advanced
management functions currently available with ON iCommand,
ON iPatch should solve a number of challenging problems
typically not addressed by conventional SD tools. These
include automated, agent-based execution of virus removal
software in an offline state (“safe mode”);
unattended removal of unauthorized applications such
as P2P file sharing; and remote unattended disaster
recovery from bare metal, for highly-corrupted systems.
