PowerQuest V2i Protector 1.1 Reduces Server Recovery Time, Delivers Additional Data Protection Functionality for Windows 2000 Server

Backup and disaster recovery solution now provides original state recovery, broader support for IT configurations to ensure faster data recovery for greater number of enterprise customers

OREM Utah – Jan. 15, 2003 – PowerQuest® Corporation, a provider of storage lifecycle automation to businesses worldwide, announces the release of PowerQuest V2i Protector™ 1.1, the latest upgrade of its disk-to-disk backup and disaster recovery solution for Windows 2000 Server and Windows 2000 Advanced Server that helps businesses protect valuable systems and data. PowerQuest V2i Protector 1.1 extends its disaster recovery protection to include hidden server utility partitions in addition to supporting double-byte systems, thus allowing more customers with varied computing environments to better protect their valuable system and data volumes. Additionally, V2i Protector now provides IT administrators greater control when protecting database volumes and allows the protection of online clustered server volumes.

Built on PowerQuest’s Storage Lifecycle Automation Management™ (SLAM) architecture, V2i Protector leverages PowerQuest’s Virtual Volume Imaging (V2i) technology to provide businesses a faster and broader level of server protection by creating a point-in-time backup image that can be used to restore a server failing due to hardware, software or user error.

V2i Protector 1.1 provides disaster recovery protection to server utility partitions. These partitions are typically not protected by other backup solutions. Utility partitions are important to IT administrators because they allow access to the server’s diagnostic and system utilities, even if the server’s diskette and CD drives become unavailable. The recovery time for bare metal restores is now significantly reduced because administrators can protect OEM service partitions and return systems to their original state by recovering all of their crucial system environments.

"Additional support in PowerQuest V2i Protector 1.1 enables customers to more broadly cast a net of system and data protection over their IT environment," said Vince Kisala, Director of Network Technology at Man Financial. "With PowerQuest V2i Protector 1.1, downtime is virtually eliminated by providing original state recovery that ensures access to all crucial system environments in the event of a disaster."

V2i Protector now includes the ability to incorporate external command files for greater control over the state of critical applications like databases prior to, during and following the protection process. This additional support now delivers the capability to capture more complete backups of a database volume.

Additional new features in V2i Protector 1.1 include:

  • Unicode support for double-byte systems addresses the needs of customers in the Asia-Pacific region.

  • Ability to mount multiple V2i Protector backup images as multiple network volumes provides fast recovery of files and folders.

  • Multiple volume restore allows the administrator to recover an entire server with one restore request as opposed to queuing up a recovery task for each volume on the server.

  • Functionality within a SAN environment that utilizes multiple fiber channel cards ensures greater flexibility in storing backup images to existing SAN storage devices.

PowerQuest V2i Protector creates compressed backup images of system and data server volumes—including operating system, server settings and preferences—that can be used to restore system and data volumes, or individual files and folders, in minutes, as opposed to the hours it can take using other backup methods. Traditional recovery methods often require that multiple removable media be analyzed to search for files. A complete restoration using these methods takes valuable time to find and change media, reload the operating system and reinstall necessary OS service packs.

PowerQuest V2i Protector complements and adds a more comprehensive layer of protection to other backup and recovery methods, such as tape backup. It can also function as the sole solution for businesses that have not invested in other backup and recovery solutions.
