Quantum, PowerQuest Enter Agreement to Simplify Automated Desktop Backup Solutions to European Customers
CeBIT2000, Hannover, Germany - Feb 24, 2000 -
Quantum Corporation's DLT and Storage Systems Group (NYSE: DSS) and PowerQuest Corporation today announced an agreement to work together to deliver the benefits of PowerQuest's advanced data protection and storage device management technologies to users of Quantum's Snap Server family of network-attached storage servers in Europe.
Quantum's new Snap Server 4000, introduced today at CeBIT2000, is a 120GB RAID 5 capable workgroup file server. The Snap Server 4000 is part of a rapidly growing market segment sometimes referred to as Network Attached Storage (NAS). The new Snap Server 4000 is designed to fulfill higher-end network needs to meet the requirements of corporate workgroups in large organizations, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Application Service Providers (ASPs). Included with the Snap Server 4000 is a copy of PowerQuest's DataKeeper Snap Edition, which offers unlimited user licenses. DataKeeper Snap Edition copies and stores files onto the Snap Server, providing business owners and users comprehensive data protection, with access to their files from anywhere with network access.
DataKeeper Snap Edition
PowerQuest's DataKeeper Snap Edition automatically monitors file activity in the background and backs up data on the fly to the server without user intervention. Restoring files is simple and intuitive, minimizing the need for technical assistance. Versioning and archiving are designed to allow recovery of data from "snapshots" taken at different points in time and to protect the user from inadvertently saving over an active file.
DataKeeper Snap Edition also features a mobile mode. When customers are disconnected from the home network, backups for laptops and desktops are saved to local disk storage and are synchronized with the Snap Server when reconnected.
"Quantum and PowerQuest have similar goals in enhancing storage usability and manageability," says Clark Johnson, senior vice president of global sales and marketing for PowerQuest. "The two companies provide unique and compatible technologies that will deliver better storage solutions for corporate workgroups."
Bridging a Data Protection Gap
PowerQuest DataKeeper addresses what can be a serious gap in data protection: workstation backup. A recent survey by Strategic Research Corporation found that less than 12% of user workstations are backed up by conventional backup systems.
"By adding PowerQuest's technology to our current server solutions, we are providing an easy to use, cost-effective solution to the complex and expensive problem of storage backup," says Sara Spivey, vice president of marketing for Quantum's Snap Division. "We look forward to a continued relationship that provides comprehensive storage products that address our customers' real storage needs."
An International English version of PowerQuest's DataKeeper Snap Edition will be available in March with every Quantum Snap Server 4000 sold through Quantum's distributors in Germany and in the UK. German, French and Spanish language versions are scheduled to be available in April.
