New Version of PartitionMagic Gives Windows XP Users Control of Hard Drive Resources

PartitionMagic 7.0 certified for Designed for Windows Logo Program, supports larger hard drives

OREM, Utah - August 27, 2001 - PowerQuest® Corporation, a provider of proven solutions for storage management, announces the release of PartitionMagic® 7.0, the latest version of PowerQuest’s award-winning partitioning solution to create, resize, move, split, delete, undelete and merge partitions on a hard drive without destroying data. PartitionMagic 7.0 is one of the first products to meet the quality standards of the Designed for Windows Logo Program, ensuring the benefits of the leading partitioning software are available to users of Microsoft Corp.’s latest operating system.

“Microsoft is pleased that PowerQuest is building its products to meet the standards of the Designed for Windows Logo Program,” said John Fredericksen, general manager for Windows marketing. “PartitionMagic 7.0, with its enhanced NTFS support, will help users experience the full benefits of Windows XP.”

Users can now create multiple partitions on hard drives up to 80 GB to boot and run multiple operating systems and organize their data and protect it from harm. PartitionMagic 7.0 creates and manipulates the partitions on hard drives on which multiple operating systems can reside, while BootMagic® technology, included with PartitionMagic, allows the user to switch from one OS to another without worry of compatibility problems.

New to PartitionMagic 7.0
In addition to support for Windows XP and larger hard drives, PartitionMagic now has the ability to merge NTFS partitions under Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XP, which eliminates the need for copying data to another partition prior to creating, moving and resizing the partition. Merging of the NTFS partitions requires that both partitions be of the same NTFS version and of the same cluster size, or the merge cannot occur.

Another new feature of PartitionMagic 7.0 is support for USB drives, allowing users to access and manipulate external USB drives. During the process of splitting partitions, PartitionMagic 7.0 now allows users to move subfolders or certain files within folders to a new partition instead of having to move entire root files or folders over to a new partition. These features give the user greater flexibility in managing the computer’s storage resources and organizing data.

PartitionMagic 7.0 also incorporates a new method for analyzing the system drives at startup, reducing the amount of memory needed to describe the drives and thereby reducing the amount of time required to start the application.

The professional version, PartitionMagic Pro 7.0, includes scripting capabilities that automate the partitioning process for IT professionals. PartitionMagic Pro 7.0 also contains remote functionality, allowing the IT administrator to manipulate partitions from a remote location. IT professionals can script a standard partitioning setup for the users company-wide, eliminating the need to script a partitioning setup for each individual computer.
