Continuous Monitoring
The 2010 Federal Information Security Management Act, also referred to as FISMA 2.0, requires continuous monitoring of information systems as part of every agency’s information security program. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has set a deadline for agency CIOs to implement software to continuously monitor the security of their networks by the end of fiscal 2012.
This solution is one of four components within Symantec’s Situational Awareness approach. Through a five-step process, Symantec’s Continuous Monitoring Solution provides Federal Government customers with complementary capabilities that enable agencies to continuously monitor their entire IT environment, remediate those items vulnerable and out of compliance, and report in compliance with federal data call requirements.
  1. Continuous Discovery – identify and maintain a near real-time inventory of all networks, IT assets and confidential and critical data
  2. Vulnerability Assessment – automatically scan and compare IT asset configurations against various internal and external criteria
  3. Configuration Audits – continuously evaluate client, server, and network device configurations and compare with standards and policies including NIST and SCAP
  4. Patch Management – automatically deploy and update software and correct configuration settings to eliminate vulnerability and maintain compliance
  5. Analytics & Reporting – aggregate and analyze systems logs and events, correlate unusual activities in compliance with regulations, and automate reporting through CyberScope
