Symantec Gateway Security Scores High Marks in Comparative Testing

Independent Testing From VeriTest Confirms Symantec Gateway Security Easier-To-Use And Offers Better Security Than Competition Tested

SYDNEY --NSW - March 11, 2003 -- Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that Symantec Gateway Security outperformed similar competitive configurations with products from Cisco, Checkpoint, ISS and Trend Micro in comparative testing conducted by VeriTest, the testing division of Lionbridge Technologies (NASDAQ: LIOX). Symantec Gateway Security's ease-of-use and integrated security technology proved to be an ideal combination for a cost-effective means of securing the network gateway.

Symantec Gateway Security provides customers with a comprehensive gateway security solution that integrates firewall, intrusion detection, antivirus, content filtering and VPN technologies into an easy-to-use appliance. According to the VeriTest report, "all of the above security layers are integrated into one appliance and are controlled, managed and updated singularly through one management console interface. The use of one appliance in a network also limits exposure to support costs as one vendor covers all technical and warranty support."

"The results from VeriTest validate Symantec's strategy of providing customers with truly integrated security solutions that are designed to protect their valuable business assets," said Greg Gotta, vice president, product delivery, Symantec Corp. "Symantec Gateway Security provides customers a cost effective, integrated intrusion prevention solution to protect networks from complex Internet threats."

The integrated combination of components included in Symantec Gateway Security is particularly helpful in combating today's "blended" threats, such as Code Red, Nimda and Klez, at the enterprise gateway. The VeriTest report stated "with the combined use of the application layer technologies with the VPN, intrusion detection system, content filtering and virus protection, the integration provides the best security among the test group, particularly when the integration takes place in a single appliance as opposed to separating these functions amongst a variety of appliances in the network."
