Symantec Launches New Internet Security and Problem Solving Solutions for Macintosh Users

New versions of Norton Internet Security and Norton SystemWorks provide enhanced virus protection, new web content filtering and superior system optimisation.

SYDNEY --NSW - 13 June, 2003 -- Symantec, the world leader in Internet security, today announced Norton Internet Security 3.0 for Macintosh, the most complete Internet security solution for the Macintosh platform, and Norton SystemWorks 3.0 for Macintosh, the world's first complete antivirus and problem solving solution optimised for Mac OS X.

Norton Internet Security 3.0 for Macintosh includes Norton AntiVirus 9.0, which now has the ability to find and repair Windows/PC-compatible viruses, offering users protection from the most common types of viruses and helps them to avoid infecting friends and colleagues. A new feature of Norton Internet Security 3.0 is Parental Control, which blocks Web sites that are inappropriate for viewing by children.

Norton SystemWorks 3.0 for Macintosh combines the latest enhancements to Symantec's market-leading utility and antivirus products - Norton Utilities 8.0 for Macintosh and Norton AntiVirus 9.0 for Macintosh with select partner back-up, faster system optimisation, easier data recovery and Mac OS X and bootable CD.

NORTON INTERNET SECURITY 3.0 FOR MACINTOSH WILL INCLUDE:

  • Norton Privacy Control, which offers new Parental Controls to prevent undesired access to inappropriate Web content, and includes enhanced ad blocking capabilities for hassle-free Web surfing
  • Norton AntiVirus 9.0 for Macintosh, which now scans and disinfects both PC and Mac viruses for added protection
  • Norton Personal Firewall 3.0 for Macintosh, which maximises security by blocking both inbound and outbound Web traffic, and features a new set-up assistant designed for easy installation and set-up
  • iClean by Aladdin Systems, for quick removal of cookies, cache and history files to further protect users' privacy

Expanded Privacy Control
Norton Privacy Control provides Internet users with important tools to protect their personal information and to improve their Web surfing experiences. With the addition of new Parental Controls, Mac users can limit access to illicit Web sites when their kids go online. Parents can either create their own list of inappropriate sites to block, or they can download a URL list produced and maintained by Symantec. This URL list is updated regularly to keep up with the latest questionable Web content, and is automatically provided to Norton Internet Security users via Symantec's LiveUpdate technology.

Norton Privacy Control also offers users new advanced ad blocking capabilities, which now will prevent more types of Web-based advertising delivery, including JavaScript, allowing Mac users to access the Internet with less hassle from the constant intrusion of unwanted banner ads and pop-up windows. Additionally Norton Privacy Control has enhanced confidential data blocking to help users avoid unknowingly or accidentally sending out sensitive information online, including via Instant Messenger programs.

Firewall Protection Made Easy
Norton Personal Firewall 3.0 for Macintosh helps keep Mac users' data safe and secure by providing a protective layer between their computers and the growing number of hackers and intruders that lurk online. With the latest version, Symantec adds a new Set-up Assistant to ensure easy installation and configuration. It also helps users by detecting services, such as file-sharing, when they are activated to prevent potential conflicts. Additionally, it provides a higher level of security by blocking both inbound and outbound connections, and also allows users to identify and trace potential hacking attempts in real time with the new Visual Tracking feature.

Norton AntiVirus 9.0 for Macintosh
In addition to protecting users from Mac-specific threats, the latest version of Norton AntiVirus also prevents Mac users from inadvertently being carriers of Windows-based threats and proliferating malicious attacks. PC virus, worm and Trojan protection also enables multi-platform users to utilise one solution to protect all their operating systems from the threat of attack.

New functionality in Norton AntiVirus 9.0 for Macintosh includes the ability to quarantine "unrepairable" virus-infected files, and allows users to scan and repair compressed Mac files. Symantec has also enhanced LiveUpdate, helping users to dramatically reduce the time it takes to download new virus definitions.

NORTON SYSTEMWORKS 3.0 FOR MACINTOSH INCLUDES:

  • Norton Utilities 8.0 for Macintosh, the most complete set of disk repair, data recovery and optimisation tools for the Mac platform
  • Norton AntiVirus 9.0 for Macintosh, which now scans and disinfects both PC and Mac viruses for added protection
  • Retrospect Express Backup by Dantz, which stores backup files on removable cartridges, DVD-RAM, compatible, CD-R/RW, MO, an external hard drive, or even on a secure site via the Internet
  • Spring Cleaning by Aladdin Systems, which completely uninstalls applications and their associated files to regain disk space and sweep away hard-to-find Internet cookies, cache, and history files

Norton Utilities 8.0 for Macintosh
Symantec's Norton SystemWorks 3.0 for Macintosh includes a full version of Norton Utilities 8.0 for Macintosh. In this latest version, users can defrag Mac OS X hard drives in idle time, thereby having less impact on their work. Additionally, users can schedule FileSaver scans of the hard disk making it easier to use and more convenient, as well as being able to boot and run more utilities in Mac OS X - including Volume Recover and Wipe Info, providing better optimisation and recovery.

Pricing and Availability
Available this month, Norton Internet Security 3.0 for Macintosh and Norton SystemWorks 3.0 for Macintosh run on Mac OS X and Mac OS 9 and retail for an estimated price of $179.95 and $199.95 respectively.

Norton Utilities 8.0 for Macintosh, Norton AntiVirus 9.0 for Macintosh and Norton Personal Firewall 3.0 for Macintosh can also be purchased separately as stand alone products, for an estimated retail price of $149.95, $129.95 and $129.95 respectively. Symantec's new Macintosh products are available for purchase at various retail locations throughout Australia in June.
