Symantec Secures Financial Data For Victorian Construction Industry

CoINVEST outsources security management for industry web-based portal

SYDNEY --NSW - September 10, 2003 -- Symantec, the world leader in Internet security, today announced it has been chosen by CoINVEST Limited to protect and manage the security of its web-based portal for the Victorian construction industry. As part of the agreement, Symantec will implement Symantec ManHunt to perform advanced intrusion detection, real-time threat analysis, and response, and will manage CoINVEST's security infrastructure through its global Symantec Managed Security Services facilities in Sydney.

With affiliations nationwide, CoINVEST manages an annual $22 million worth of long service leave claims and payments for over 124,000 workers and apprentices, 15,000 employers, and 18,000 contractors who are currently registered with the organisation.

When CoINVEST chose to streamline its operations through the development of an industry web portal, it recognised the need for a comprehensive, fully secure ecommerce infrastructure to ensure the integrity of members' personal and financial details when making claims or contributions online.

"The security of our members' transactions is crucial to our ecommerce strategy and we needed to build an infrastructure strong enough to maintain system integrity no matter what," said Mr Fook Seng Chong, Chief Information Officer, CoINVEST. "Symantec offered a complete enterprise-wide intrusion detection solution that guaranteed us full protection across the network, and matched the technology with a team of experts who are able to remotely manage our security posture at all times."

As part of its Managed Security Services capabilities, Symantec will manage and monitor CoINVEST's security environment remotely from its North Ryde-based Symantec Security Operations Centre (SOC), providing monitoring, analysis and response from its global team of security experts around the clock.

"Symantec Managed Security Services will allow CoINVEST to leverage the experience and vigilance of our security experts in order to protect the assets of the organisation and its members," said Gavin Lowth, Symantec, Managed Security Services, Operations Manager, Asia Pacific. "By outsourcing the management of its security infrastructure to the Symantec SOC, CoINVEST will effectively minimise its investments in technology and resources while ensuring its systems are protected from the risk of cyber threats 24x7."

Following a competitive process, CoINVEST decided to implement Symantec ManHunt, to provide network intrusion detection, real-time analysis and correlation, and proactive prevention and response to protect enterprise networks against internal and external intrusions and denial-of-service attacks.

Symantec ManHunt monitors network traffic at speeds of up to two gigabits per second on up to six-gigabit interfaces, dependent upon system configuration. Its multi-layered detection architecture combines protocol anomaly detection, signature detection, denial-of-service and scan detection, and IDS evasion detection to accurately and effectively identify known and unknown attacks.

Symantec's ManHunt provides multiple detection methodologies to detect both known and unknown attacks, using protocol anomaly detection, custom signature support, traffic state profiling, and statistical flow analysis to identify intrusions and denial of service attacks.

"Symantec's ability to provide 24x7x365 monitoring of the ManHunt IDS implementation, as well as third party solutions, is key to our partnership as we are confident that we will be alerted to potential risks immediately and can act proactively rather than reactively," said Mr Fook Seng. "Symantec has provided a truly integrated solution - the product, consulting and proactive management necessary to protect ourselves and our customers."
