Symantec Announces Norton AntiVirus Gold Edition 2.0 - New combined package of Norton AntiVirus for multiple platforms
14 July 1997 - Symantec Corporation, the global leader in anti-virus software, today announced Norton AntiVirus (NAV) Gold Edition 2.0 for Australia and New Zealand.
NAV Gold Edition 2.0 consists of the NAV product family for four platforms - NAV 3.0 for DOS and Windows 3.1, NAV 2.0 for Windows 95, and NAV 2.0 for Windows NT. It also includes trial versions of pcANYWHERE 7.5, ACT! 3.0, Internet FastFind and Speed Disk (for Windows NT).
"Norton AntiVirus Gold Edition 2.0 has been developed specifically for the Asia Pacific region," said Michelle Amery, General Manager, Symantec Australia and New Zealand. "NAV Gold Edition 2.0 demonstrates Symantec's global commitment to providing solutions specific to our customers needs.
"The availability of NAV Gold Edition 2.0 co-incides with the launch of the Asia Pacific Symantec AntiVirus Research Centre (SARC) on August 6. The Asia Pacific SARC is the third Symantec AntiVirus Research Centre and the second to be launched outside of the United States. The Asia Pacific SARC will provide our customers with regionally specific and immediate information and solutions to virus threats."
Live Update
Norton AntiVirus technology provides flexible and adaptable anti-virus security solutions. LiveUpdate revolutionises the update process and provides end-users and system administrators with an easy way to protect against both today's virus threats and those that will appear in the future. With the click of a button, LiveUpdate detects an Internet connection or modem, automatically connects it to a Symantec server, then downloads and installs the latest virus definitions. In addition to receiving Symantec's free monthly virus definition updates, LiveUpdate may also be used to install software patches and obtain product information.
Striker – Polymorphic Virus Detection
Polymorphic viruses represent a growing threat as they account for approximately 22 per cent of today’s viruses. With each new infection, the virus encrypts itself using a different scheme so that it never looks the same.
With an infinite number of ways to conceal themselves, polymorphic viruses elude the standard virus detection method of using a scanner to identify a particular sequence of code sometimes known as a "signature". Norton AntiVirus’ Striker technology employs a new approach to detect the chameleon-like polymorphics. Each time NAV scans the computer it sets up a "virtual PC." This becomes a "clean room" in which NAV safely executes the potentially infected file without endangering other files on local and remote hard disks.
Best Macro Virus Protection
Independent testing verifies that only the Norton family of anti-virus software detects and repairs all 10 of the 10 most prevalent Word Macro viruses.
About Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC)
SARC is comprised of one of the world's largest dedicated teams of virus experts whose sole mission is to provide swift, global responses to computer virus threats, proactively research and develop technologies that eliminate such threats, and educate the public on safe computing practices. As new computer viruses appear, SARC develops identification and detection for these viruses, and provides either a repair or delete operation, thus keeping users protected against the latest virus threats.
The Asia Pacific SARC to be launched in Australia on August 6 will conduct local research and development to provide customers in the Asia Pacific region with a rapid verification and response to virus infections. In addition, the Centre will research virus development locally to ascertain where the viruses are coming from and how they are being developed so that Symantec can build effective and thorough protection for their customers.
