Emails from LiveUpdate Keep Users Up to Date at All Times
24 September 1997 - Symantec Corporation today announced Norton AntiVirus Gold 4.0, the latest version of the industry's leading automatic, comprehensive virus protection for Windows 95, Windows NT, Windows 3.1, and DOS workstations.
NAV Gold 4.0 protects all the possible entry points for viruses, including shared floppy disks, the Internet, e-mail attachments, and networks. NAV Gold 4.0 also incorporates the new Norton Safe on the Web, providing customers with advanced Internet security. Norton AntiVirus Gold Edition Version 2.0 was released in July this year following customer demand for a multi-platform anti-virus solution.
NAV Gold 4.0 provides users with detection and repair of in-the-wild viruses. In addition, NAV Gold 4.0 users receive cutting-edge protection against unknown viruses through Symantec's revolutionary Bloodhound technology. The Bloodhound system uses heuristic technology to analyse programmes, detect unknown or new viruses, and enable the user to repair the infected file immediately.
"NAV Gold 4.0 includes revolutionary technology and an email system direct from Live Update to keep customers informed of the availability of new virus definitions and the latest virus information," said Michelle Amery, General Manager, Symantec Australia and New Zealand. "Combined with the opening of the Symantec AntiVirus Research Centre in the Asia Pacific, NAV Gold 4.0 will provide customers in this region with the most up to date and responsive anti-virus protection available."
Keeping AntiVirus Software Up to Date - LiveUpdate
It is crucial for users to keep virus definitions up-to-date or risk rendering their computers vulnerable to the hundreds of new viruses that surface every month. NAV Gold 4.0's LiveUpdate feature updates users with the latest virus definitions and can be scheduled in advance.
These updates, which continue for the life of the product, are free of charge, automatically delivered, and fully tested at all times. Additionally, NAV Gold 4.0 introduces a new e-mail feature for LiveUpdate. Just by registering e-mail addresses, users are kept informed of the latest virus information, availability of new virus definitions, and any hoaxes or other threats to guard against.
Norton Safe on the Web (NSOW) and Norton Secret Stuff (NSS)
NAV Gold 4.0 provides customers with advanced Internet security and ecryption technology with Norton Safe on the Web and Norton Secret Stuff. Norton Safe on the Web denies access to all protected files to all uncertified programmes, for example, customers can identify which programmes have access to the document files, and if any other programme tries to access the protected files a warning is sent and access denied.
Repair Wizard
NAV Gold 4.0 also includes Repair Wizard, which simplifies system cleanup after a virus infection. This feature walks the user through the step-by-step cleanup of an infection and removes viruses automatically without damaging files.
Symantec AntiVirus Research Center
NAV Gold 4.0 is backed by the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC) with a recently opened office in Sydney. SARC is the industry's largest dedicated team of virus experts. The center's mission is to provide swift, global responses to computer virus threats, proactively research and develop technologies that eliminate such threats, and educate the public on safe computing practices. Since officially opening in August, the Sydney SARC has already identified 10 new viruses.
