Symantec Provides pcANYWHERE Express Internet Components

Remote thin-client components available free-of-charge to licensed users of pcANYWHERE32 8.0 on Symantec website

Cupertino, Calif. --January 7, 1998--Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq:SYMC), the worldwide leader in PC communications software, announced today an innovative product for corporations and end-users that increases their remote control functionality by expanding the capabilities of Symantec's market-leading remote control solution. pcANYWHERE EXPRESS is a set of three communications components that provide remote control capabilities through the current leading Internet browsers and includes the first and only Java remote control client. This will allow users to enhance their remote access to information on their desktop, anytime and anywhere.

"As corporate sites continue to deploy intranets, web based remote control products will allow enterprises to extend their reach to a more expansive remote and mobile population," said Stephen Drake, research analyst, Intranet Networking Architecture division at International Data Corporation. "Products such as pcANYWHERE EXPRESS provide a common user interface increasing productivity and lowering total cost of the desktop."

pcANYWHERE Express includes three components: the ActiveX Remote Client which will run under Microsoft's Internet Explorer; the Netscape Plug-in Remote Client which will run under both Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator; and a technology preview of a Java Remote Client which will also run on any Java 1.1 compatible browser.

Key Features
pcANYWHERE EXPRESS will provide key remote access functionality to allow users to remotely control their host PC or server running pcANYWHERE32 8.0; allow clipboard text and graphics transfer between the remote PC and the desktop PC; and TCP/IP support which will allow for network connections and use over the Internet.

pcANYWHERE EXPRESS will provide:

  • ezZOOM Navigation which allows the user to place a selection style tool over portions of the complete snapshot view of the host's screen and the user can then select this portion by simply lifting the mouse button
  • ezSCROLL which provides the ability to quickly scroll the screen without the need for scroll bars. The user can grab the host view and move it around seamlessly.
  • Host Mouse tracking provides the ability to allow the mouse movement on the desktop host to scroll the view on the pcANYWHERE EXPRESS remote.
  • TCP/IP connectivity will allow users, who have a network interface card installed, to connect and perform remote control over a TCP/IP network.
  • Clipboard Transfer will allow users to quickly and easily pass text and graphics from their remote PC to the host PC.
  • Security pcANYWHERE Express will maintain the same basic level of security that other versions of pcANYWHERE provide.
  • Reduce Host desktop allows remote users to size the host side for optimal viewing.

Availability and System Requirements
pcANYWHERE EXPRESS is now available and free-of-charge to licensed users of pcANYWHERE32 v8.0 on Symantec's website (
/pcanywhere/express). Users of pcANYWHERE EXPRESS will need to have the current version of pcANYWHERE32, Version 8.0 installed on their host PC. The clients require Microsoft Windows 95 or NT 4.0, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Version 3.02 and Netscape Navigator 3.03 or better. Internet Explorer 4.0 and Netscape 4.03 are required for the Java client.
