TORONTO, October 26, 1998 -- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in utility software for business and personal computing has announced that Quarterdeck's Remove-It 98 is now included on the free Bonus Pack for Norton SystemWorks, the industry's first wholly integrated suite of utility and anti-virus products.

Norton SystemWorks includes Symantec's award-winning utility and anti-virus products: Norton Utilities, Norton Anti-Virus, Norton CrashGuard and a six-month subscription to Norton Web Services. The free Bonus Pack of individual products includes Quarterdeck's Remove-it 98 and four of Symantec's popular communications and Internet products: Norton Mobile Essentials, Visual Page, WinFax Basic Edition and pcANYWHERE EXPRESS. Together, the Norton SystemWorks package and Bonus Pack represents a retail value totaling over (US) $500.

Quarterdeck's Remove-It 98, which PC Magazine called "one of those gotta-have utilities," safely and accurately removes any 32 or 16-bit application. It supports long filenames, the system registry, drag-and-drop and other Windows 95 features.

Norton SystemWorks vs. McAfee Office
An integrated suite like Norton SystemWorks differs from a bundled offering like Network Associates' (Nasdaq: NETA) McAfee Office in several notable areas:

Installation
Norton SystemWorks requires a single install and registration. McAfee Office requires the user to install and register each product separately and in a prescribed order, then reboot after every installation. In addition, after each install, the manual prompts McAfee Office users with the following: Make sure after each installation that you restart and test your system to make sure there are no conflicts with existing software before installing additional components.

Core technologies
Each product in Norton SystemWorks was developed at Symantec. Out of McAfee Office's ten products, only two were originally developed by Network Associates; two others were originally developed by Helix, four by CyberMedia, one by PGP and another by Netopia. This "kitchen sink" approach results in overlapping product functionality, significant incompatibility issues, limited interface consistency and overall mismanagement of system resources. For example, McAfee Office includes three versions of WinGuage - one from Nuts & Bolts, one from Hurricane and a third from 2000 ToolBox. Beyond the duplicate functionality and space requirements, this can cause resource problems when each scan runs simultaneously.

Documentation
Norton SystemWorks ships with a 150-page manual that covers all products in the suite. McAfee Office ships with a 22-page user guide that includes only install information and brief product description. For more in-depth documentation, McAfee Office users must go online to access individual product manuals.

Desktop
Because Norton SystemWorks is a single package, it places one icon on the desktop. McAfee Office places 10 icons on the desktop. In addition, if a Norton SystemWorks user chooses to not install a product, the Norton SystemWorks Integrator shows a gray button indicating that the product is not installed. If a McAfee Office user chooses to not install a product, the McAfee Office Central is unchanged. Instead, a user trying to access an uninstalled product receives an error message.

Rescue disk sets
Upon installation of the product, Norton SystemWorks users are prompted to make a single rescue disk for emergency use. McAfee Office users are prompted to create rescue or emergency disks after installing Nuts & Bolts, 2000 ToolBox, VirusScan and Guard Dog. In addition, First Aid also offers to create yet another emergency disk. As a result, knowing which disk to use in case of an emergency is confusing and difficult.

Norton SystemWorks is available at a suggested retail price of (US) $99.95.

Norton SystemWorks requires an IBM PC or 100% compatible, Windows 95/98, 486/66 or higher, 16MB RAM, 95MB hard disk space for typical installation - 115 MB for complete installation, CD-ROM drive double-speed or higher and 256 color VGA or better video.

Norton SystemWorks Bonus Pack requires IBM PC or 100% compatible, Windows 95/98, Pentium 100 MHz or higher, 32 MB RAM, 103 MB Disk Space for all 5 products combined, VGA Video 256 color minimum (Super VGA recommended), CD-ROM drive, Fax Modem required: Class 1, Class 2, Class 2.0 (WinFax only) TCP/IP Network Protocol (pcANYWHERE EXPRESS only), and pcANYWHERE Host, version 8.0 or higher (pcANWHERE EXPRESS only).
