Symantec receives Top Honours from Home Office Computing Magazine

First Annual HOC 100 Awards Recognise Innovation, Dependability and Performance of Four Symantec Products

TORONTO, November 17, 1998 -- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), the worldwide leader in utility software for business and personal computing, today announced that Home Office Computing recognised Norton SystemWorks, pcTelecommute, pcANYWHERE32 8.0 and ACT! 4.0 in its first annual HOC 100 Awards, giving Symantec the distinction of earning more HOC 100 Awards than all its competitors. To be published in HOC's December cover story, the HOC 100 Awards are given by editors who choose the 100 best products of the year for home office entrepreneurs, telecommuters and after-hours corporate workers.

Symantec's Norton SystemWorks received the top Gold award for the Utility Package category while pcTelecommute earned the Gold award for the Remote Access listing. Symantec products dominated the Remote Access category as pcANYWHERE 32 8.0 was awarded the Silver Remote Access award. Symantec's ACT! 4.0 received a Silver award in the Contact Management listing.

According to Eric Grevstad, editor in chief of Home Office Computing, Symantec's technology meets the needs and boosts the business productivity of home office workers. Grevstad, along with other HOC editors, based their Symantec award picks on the value, innovation, dependability and performance Symantec's products offer to home office workers - the workers Grevstad said are the "fastest-growing, hardest working part of the high-tech marketplace."

"Symantec is dedicated to providing the best software available to home office workers to help them run productive, efficient businesses," said Christopher Calisi, vice president of Symantec's Remote Productivity Solutions Business Unit. "This substantial recognition from Home Office Computing shows us we are fulfilling that goal."

As HOC Gold award winners, Norton SystemWorks and pcTelecommute are both "industry firsts." Norton SystemWorks is the industry's first integrated suite of utility and anti-virus products. It was designed specifically to provide consumers a comprehensive, integrated and flexible solution to keep their computers working. pcTelecommute is the industry's first telecommuting productivity solution. pcTelecommute is easy-to-use and provides integrated features, productivity tools and support that will help make telecommuting easier to implement.

HOC Silver award winners include ACT! 4.0 chosen by HOC in October as the 'Best Buy' for contact management software and pcANYWHERE32 8.0 recently listed on USA Today's Software Hot List. ACT! 4.0 helps users schedule appointments, calls, meetings to-dos and change plans. It extends customer databases with the world on Internet information, delivers superior integration with communication tools and provides the power users are looking for in a familiar and easy-to-use interface. pcANYWHERE is the first remote access product of its kind to provide complete access to data, applications and people. pcANYWHERE continues to set the standard for reliability and ease-of-use in remote communication software.

With a circulation of over 5,000,000, Home Office Computing targets small business owners with fewer than five employees and executives who work from home. The magazine offers practical advice for building successful businesses through the use of technology.
