Symantec Announces Norton Ghost for Netware

TORONTO, November 20, 1998 -- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in utility software for business and personal computing announced that Norton Ghost for NetWare is now available as a public beta at www.ghost4nw.com. Norton Ghost for NetWare is the most advanced disk cloning technology available today. This product enhances Symantec's solutions for corporate customers by providing them with software tools that help to manage network systems more effectively and cost efficiently. Norton Ghost for NetWare will be available in January, 1999.

Norton Ghost for NetWare can significantly reduce the time and expense associated with maintaining and updating new NetWare servers. It automates the process of cloning a NetWare server to minimise or eliminate network administrator total cost of ownership and enables fast recovery when a server fails, returning it to its original configuration in minutes.

Key Features

  • Cloning NetWare servers - the ability to set up a single NetWare server, image the drive and populate that image across a networked environment which in turn reduces the total cost of ownership (TCO) and guarantees that the image is reliable.
  • Assist in hardware migration - the unique ability to resize NetWare partitions in order to circumvent the complete reloading of NetWare on the new hardware.
  • Disaster recovery - quickly restore a NetWare server in the event of a disaster by pulling the original image and configuration of the server from a safe media, such as another server, CD-ROM, JAZ drive, tape, etc.

"Norton Ghost for NetWare will dramatically reduce the time spent by system administrators when reconfiguring, cloning or restoring Novell NetWare Servers," said Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business Unit. "Norton Ghost for NetWare will help our customers make the rollout process faster, more efficient and reliable, resulting in reduced cost of ownership and increased productivity."

Traditionally, the IS manager would spend several hours at night or on weekends, loading and restoring their servers. Norton Ghost for NetWare reduces the time it takes to restore a server thus reducing the total cost of ownership. Using Norton Ghost for NetWare can help an IS manager restore a server in as little as 15 minutes thus reducing the cost of maintaining NetWare servers.

Norton Ghost for NetWare works by creating an identical image of a NetWare volume, effectively taking a "snapshot" of all the files-hidden, visible and system - that make up the operating system, applications and configuration settings. This image can then be copied to any number of servers, thereby creating completely identical installations.
