Symantec VisualCafé Selected by Compaq for Enterprise Java Development on Compaq Tru64 UNIX and Windows NT Mixed Server Environments

TORONTO - March 25, 1999 -- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) has announced that its VisualCafé Enterprise Suite will be jointly marketed with Compaq Computer Corporation (Nasdaq: CPQ) for enterprise Java development on Compaq's newly named Compaq Tru64 UNIX systems in mixed server environments. VisualCafé Enterprise Suite is designed to be hosted on Intel-Windows NT platforms and can target, deploy and debug Java code on Windows NT and Compaq Tru64 UNIX servers.

Visual Café Enterprise Suite is the first of a new generation of integrated development environments (IDEs) that enable companies to quickly build sophisticated server based enterprise applications in Java that leverage the Internet and corporate intranets and extranets. VisualCafé Enterprise Suite makes rapid development of distributed applications - so-called because they run on multiple, often geographically dispersed computers - as easy as developing software for one machine.

"The combination of Rapid Application Development (RAD) tool technology with Symantec's high performance Java compiler in VisualCafé Enterprise Suite should take the sting out of developing Java and application server-based systems," said Karen D. Moser, Director, Application Development Tools, Aberdeen Group Inc.

"No IT organisation writing multi-tier applications in Java can afford to overlook Symantec's VisualCafé Enterprise Suite." "Compaq is excited about the release of Symantec's VisualCafé Enterprise Suite because it simplifies and accelerates Java development for our customers," said Tim Yeaton, vice president and general manager of Compaq's UNIX Software Division. "Our customers can now develop production-oriented Java applications from a Windows NT environment and automatically deploy them with industry-leading performance on Compaq Tru64 UNIX systems."

"This is great news for Symantec since Compaq's selection of VisualCafé Enterprise Suite is a resounding endorsement of our multi-platform strategy, which gives customers the flexibility to target different enterprise hardware platforms or multiple application servers simultaneously," said Mansour Safai, vice president and general manager of Symantec's Internet Tools Division. "Virtually every major application server runs on Compaq Tru64 UNIX servers. As a result, Java developers targeting these servers, as well as Windows NT-based servers, can easily create complex, distributed applications for the enterprise." Safai noted that Visual Café Enterprise Suite is the only IDE that enables developers to do rapid development of Enterprise JavaBean (EJB) applications for any of a variety of application servers.

A trial version of VisualCafé Enterprise Suite will be included in Compaq's next version of its Internet Innovators Solutions CD for Windows NT. The CD will be shipped with every Compaq Tru64 UNIX and Windows NT AlphaServer system in the U.S. and Europe and is ordered by Compaq sales representatives and channel partners, giving VisualCafé Enterprise Suite exposure to prospective Compaq server buyers. Compaq also will promote Visual Café Enterprise Suite through its activeAnswers program of pre-engineered solutions for VARs, end users and other channel customers.

Unlike proprietary environments that combine tools, middleware and application servers from one vendor, VisualCafé Enterprise Suite employs technology that creates a tight bond to any application server, at runtime, while still expressing the server's unique characteristics. This capability makes VisualCafé Enterprise Suite a strategic centrepiece in distributed, cross-platform enterprise development.
